Upton calm as speculation swirls

08:09 AM ET 07.13 | Justin Upton did not seem all that surprised Thursday to look over his shoulder and find in Chicago's visitor's clubhouse a small pack of reporters waiting. [The] state of the club seems to have taken a backseat to the status of Upton. ... During the All-Star break, the drumbeat of rumors grew ever louder, to the point that Upton was asked to address them for the first of perhaps many times in the days leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. "I haven't been keeping up with it," Upton said. "I'm here to play baseball for the Arizona Diamondbacks, as of now." Upton did not seem angry. "It's hard to tune it out," he said of the rumors. "You hear everything, obviously from you guys when you ask me questions or things like that."

turns 25 in August, career .276//357/.477, turns 25 in August, in his 6th season in the majors, career UZR/150 is 3.1--slightly above average. The thing is Arizona can't trade him for what he is worth--an average major-leaguer--because he is young enough he might still have a breakout year. So they will have to try to trade him for what he might be worth next year or the year after, which is much trickier to pull off.

OK, so he's having a bit of a down year. Regardless, the D'backs would be outright CRAZY to trade Jup away now. A young, proven major leaguer with superstar potential for some top-end prospects? Come on now.
