08:10 AM ET 07.13 | Baseball fans in the City of Brotherly Love are about to learn just how committed the Phillies are to locking up one of their aces. [The] Phillies are preparing a substantial offer to their soon-to-be-free-agent left-hander Cole Hamels in an attempt to determine whether they can sign him to an extension in the next two weeks, sources told ESPN.com on Thursday. However, the Phillies are aware that in order to retain the winningest pitcher they have developed in the past 40 years, it could require one of the largest contracts in team history. ... The market for Hamels has been shaped in the past few months by the five-year, $112.5 million extension signed by San Francisco right-hander Matt Cain in April.

Wasn't he for sale yesterday????

July 13, 2012  08:33 AM ET

If they don't offer him at least Cliff Lee money he is walking.

This guy should be the future of the franchise. If they can sign him, great.

Trade anyone and everyone else and rebuild.

Or maybe the Ventures--"Wipe Out" comes to mind. For his sake I hope he is smart enough to stay in Philly. Any player who is fortunate enough to play for an organization he likes and is successful with should realize it isn't worth a couple million more to go someplace he doesn't fit in as well. I think Cliff Lee went back to Philly because he realized that, so maybe he will give Hamels some good advice.

THE PHILLIES;;;; either sign him to a 145 millions 6 years deal, or trade him get top prospects, and resign him in the off season, eaither way the phillies could have the win win situation that's IF the phillies are smart enough

July 13, 2012  01:07 PM ET

there are better ways to get as much the phillies can get with cole hamels as the top prized pitcher, why?? well trade him get the best prospects then resign him to a very confortable deal, unless the phillies are too greedy to know exactly what in reality they really want and how they want, wise approach?? trade him that would be the only way the team should get better in their lineup and the rotation,,,

if the angels were to trade for hamels and what the phillies could get from the halos in this trade,, the angels have ervin santana, vernon wells, and two top prospects from their minor league,,,

but, if the angels were to trade for hamels, the angels should be able to sign the pitcher to a 6 years deal before hamels hit the free agency, that should be the only condition from the angels to the phillies and to cole hamels as well,,,,,because honestly it could be a waste of players and a lose of time and it won't be fair to the halos franchise to trade for a player and get nothing in return thanks to their inability to sign that player,,,

July 13, 2012  01:19 PM ET

it not matter how much or how long the angels denied their need for another top pitcher as the quality of cole hamels, and in the free agency its very difficult to be able to win in the bidding for a top player in the market,,,,

July 13, 2012  01:21 PM ET

angels are too weak in their rotation if anybody has noted, ervin santana has been too errant not one time or two but by far too many times he has collapse in the first 3 innings with this type of problems from santana its very difficult to be able to competet in the big leagues,,,
