Berkman returning Saturday?

08:11 AM ET 07.13 | The St. Louis pitching staff suffered another blow this week, but the news is more positive among its position players. First baseman Lance Berkman, out since late May after having surgery on his right knee, is ready to play. And, no, he won't be appearing at Class AA Springfield -- or any other stop on the rehabilitation trail. After a vigorous workout Thursday before the Cardinals headed for Cincinnati and the start of a three-game series tonight, Berkman traveled with the team and said he hoped to be activated Saturday. Manager Mike Matheny said he needed to see a bit more of Berkman in workouts before making that decision, but also said Berkman would be playing at some point on this six-game trip, which includes a set in Milwaukee.

If Berkman can stay healthy the rest of the season and pitching help is obtain, this will go a long way in helping the Cards chances of making the playoffs.

Good news. Not sure what Matheny is going to do about playing time for Craig though. As productive as Craig has been, it's going to be VERY difficult to leave him off the lineup card. Unless they are comfortable playing Beltran in CF some days, it's going to be tough to find playing time for everyone.

He should sit out the season.

I think Jay could be the odd man out and maybe he could be included in trade talks with other teams.

That's possible. I think they are concerned about Beltran's knees though, and I don't think they want him playing CF every day. Craig has played there, but he is not an every day CF either.

I don't think they can lose Jay because he's the only one that can play center field regularly. Put Craig at second base :)

I think Matheny will work Lance in properly...
I can see an outfield of Holliday/Beltran and Craig with Berky back at 1st.
Imagine a lineup of Frucal, Craig, Beltran, Holliday, Berkman, Freese and Yadi??
If Wainright can get more of his old stuff back, we will make a solid charge into the playoffs.

Agree about Jay. Do you think Craig can play second? It would be worth finding out.

I think he played there a couple of times last year, but there is a significant dropoff defensively. I think I'd try it.....he can't be all that much worse than Skip is at second.
I too agree that you want Jay playing CF, but you also want Craig's bat in the lineup. Berkman will obviously be rested a fair amount, but you don't just want Craig spelling him.

I know LaRussa played him there a couple of times. I agree he can't be much worse defensively than Schumaker.

They're still good enough to get it done in their division.
