09:55 AM ET 07.14 | Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has a pretty extensive shopping list as the non-waiver July 31 trade deadline approaches. "We'd like to upgrade leadoff, cleanup and the bench -- and if we can -- help our pitching a little bit," he said. But he knows it will be difficult to address all or any of those needs. "I'm not sure if any of it is possible," he said. "But that's what we're trying to do." The Reds have been rumored to be interested in Philadelphia's Juan Pierre and San Diego's Mark Kotsay. Jocketty won't comment on active trade talks. But both make sense.

These players they are talking about are journeyman players with average contracts and you could land one or both and not have to give up much in return.

Reds CF Stubbs is hitting 212/ OBP 288 or something; Juan Pierre is hitting 307, OBP 344, with 20 SB--that would be an upgrade. But are the Phillies really willing to trade him, and as Dagweed asks, what would be the cost?

This has become an exciting division to watch this year, a player here or there might be able to make a big difference, in any event the Pirates missed a Golden Opportunity when Prince was available, maybe they thought they weren't ready to compete!

I do. Been a Reds fan for 42 years. I've felt the thrill of my team wining the World Series a few times over the years.

Getting Latos from SD was genius. Maybe Cincy can make SD look dumb again.
