James: Media responsible for Sandusky coverup

08:47 AM ET 07.15 | Joe Paterno isn't responsible for Jerry Sandusky's continued criminal acts, according to legendary baseball statistician Bill James. The press is. James, who is a Red Sox senior advisor for baseball operations, believes that Paterno, the former Penn State football coach, should be absolved of all blame for covering up Sandusky's sexual abuse of boys for years. A report issued by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh this week said Paterno and school administrators "concealed critical facts" about Sandusky's transgressions. But James blames the press, including a Sports Illustrated article, for putting Sandusky and his charitable organization for kids, Second Mile, on a pedestal. "The people who are responsible for it are the media," James said on ESPN Radio's "The Doug Gottlieb Show." "The media created this smokescreen behind which Sandusky operated and then they're trying to blame Paterno for the fact that they were covering up for Sandusky." James said that Paterno should not take a hit for this because he "had no idea how to handle it, he had no training, he had no experience, he didn't know what he was doing. Paterno pushed it off on other people and they totally missed it and totally mishandled it."

So ...
Baseball statistician Bill James (never heard of him) says it's the media's fault for putting Sandusky's Second Mile (never heard of that until lately) on a pedestal.
What a crock. The media are guilty of a lot of things but this is not one of them.

Call BS here...how much training does one need to understand that an adult sexually abusing kids is a crime and one needs to pickup the phone and call the police?

I'm so saddened by this: sad for the victims, their families, and all the Penn Staters out there who had nothing whatsoever to do with this sick, sordid situation, and as are just as shocked and horrified as the rest of the nation.
That said, the media's not responsible for McQueary, Paterno, et al. not going to the cops when they should have.

There are a lot of people who don't want to believe Paterno did nothing wrong. That's all. You have to blame somebody so blame the media. Just like watching the WTC collapsing at speed of gravity in it's own footprint. Logic and physics tell us it was a controlled demo job but most didn't want to believe their gov. could do that so they easily bought the stupid "pancake" theory. Paterno still looks like the shi**y, pathetic and now greedy old man who thought he was more important than he was and James looks like an idiot.

Paterno is guilty as OJ! It's time to take a step back and look at why Paterno tried to hide the scandal. It would have cost the Penn State Millions of dollars in endorsements. It's time the NCAA and big businesses such Nike, Adidas,Reebok and other companies that provide millions in endorsements to university programs. As long as there is millions of dollars in TV revenue and endorsements expect other universities to try and sweep their dirt under the rug.
Burn in Hell Paterno!

All this is doing is giving other people not found out yet, an excuse. Quite literally the dumbest statement on this tragedy in a long list of dumb statements from apologists.

This guy (James) can't be serious. I agree that the news media is guilty of a lot of things but this is not one.

I'm afraid we will continue to get distracted by these idiotic statements. Rather than continuing to argue against such lunacy, we should spend our time helping victims of child sexual abuse. If you are religous, keep them in your prayers; if not, keep them in your thoughts. If you can afford it, donate to charities that help the survivors. If you know a survivor, be there for them. Their pain never goes away; at best it lays beneath the surface, only to come back full force when they least expect it. Care for the victims, care for the victims, care for the victims.

Yes how hard would it be to push it off to the right people who would not totally mishandle it.
