08:14 AM ET 07.16 | Will the selloff in Chicago include not one but two frontline pitchers? After pitching six shutout innings Saturday to extend his scoreless innings streak to 33, Chicago Cubs starter Ryan Dempster could not avoid questions about his seemingly inevitable departure from the organization. With a little more than two weeks until baseball's trade deadline, 10 teams have shown legitimate interest in acquiring Dempster's services for the rest of the season, according to industry sources. Those clubs include the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves. The Cubs have started, in earnest, to look at minor league players at the lower levels of almost every farm system.

This is a great chance for the Cubs to restock their farm system by moving 3 to 5 players.

As a Dodger fan I hope We do not gut our already depleted farm system for a guy that has a couple of years left in him. Dodgers need to be realistic and realize that We have many holes in our lineup and even if we somehow make it to the postseason we will be swept by any playoff team we face. Mattingly deserves a lot of credit for being able to manage this team to a solid record with a pathetic offense and half the team on the disabled list.

He will never be worth more. Great guy. What team with a chance at winning wouldn't want him? Sad to see him go but he can have my frequent flier miles.

Calling AA...get Dempster!

The new rules are really going to impact what teams get for starting pitchers at the deadline. Before, teams might be willing to part with top prospects for rentals like Dempster because they knew they'd get draft pick compensation when they signed elsewhere. That was Milwaulkee's justification when they traded for CC Sabathia. Now, if you're a club trying to pick Dempster, you risk losing your best prospects for one post-season with no chance to draft more talent the following year. So hopefully the Cubs don't have their hopes up for a huge payday.

Sounds right. I'm not particularly a Dodger fan, but to a casual observer they appear to need position players more than pitchers--maybe LF, 1B, and 3B. Also their catcher is having a career year, but it seems unlikely he can repeat that (isn't he in his 30s?). I understand the need to stockpile pitching, but if they have any decent prospects in the minors they should hang on to them.

Damn, NY Mets not interested?

July 16, 2012  01:15 PM ET

Get rid of Dempster. Now. I wish they would keep Garza, though.

July 16, 2012  01:16 PM ET

I'd like to see him in a Tiger uniform, but Theo will ask for the entire farm. Forget that.

July 16, 2012  03:17 PM ET

Cubs could probably get teams to overpay for Dempster

Come home to Canada! The Jays need pitching!

Dempster may have 10 suitors, but the article only mentions 6 teams.

I also read where he would be open to re-signing with the Cubs in the off season, I like Dempster, but giving up prospects for a 2 month rental is dumb.....

BINGO. They already boast 4 prospects in the top 50 and between dempster and garza they should get 4 more. I've heard Barney's name mentioned in a package deal with garza to Detroit. Pretty much everyone other than Rizzo and Castro are in play
