Contract talks hit snag with Peyton's protector

08:05 AM ET 07.18 | Contract negotiations between the Broncos and all-pro left tackle Ryan Clady have apparently been snarled. The two sides recently exchanged multiyear proposals but the numbers were far enough apart that an NFL source said an extension by the time the Broncos are to report to training camp next Wednesday does not seem likely. Clady, the Broncos' first-round pick in the 2008 draft, is scheduled to make $3.5 million this season. ... He is one of only five offensive linemen in NFL history who has started every game (64) and made two Pro Bowls through his first four seasons. Clady's position would seem to take on greater importance as he is charged with protecting the blind side of new Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

Manning is playing for the Nuggets?

The interns cleaned that one up quickly... for a change.

Must have gotten here late, Rich. Missed the Nuggets reference.

Anyhow, they really need to get this done. Elway should recognize the importance of keeping a QB healthy, especially one that they've invested so much in. We're not talking about the Browns here and just throwing QB after QB to the wolves (or the Raiders).

I'm surprised we didn't get a thread about Marshawn Lynch's DUI arrest. He could be looking at a longer-than-expected summer vacation.

Peyton wants to get this contract stuff cleaned up quickly. Good luck with that, No. 18.

Wonder if Peyton's neck began to hurt when he learned that Clady might sit out.

Last year, Sony. This year, Advil.

July 18, 2012  09:04 AM ET

All he does is protect the blind side of their $100M investment... whats the hurry?

July 18, 2012  09:09 AM ET

Protection is over-rated. Who needs insurance on a $100 million investment?

July 18, 2012  09:09 AM ET

Clady is a class act and a beast that will protect your new 100 mil investment...pay the guy denver.

The team and Peyton can't afford not to. He's probably one good hit away from retirement.

Clady's got one year left on his contract. Manning may have only one year left in his career. I hope he lasts longer than that, because he's still a class act, but I have my doubts.

Neck injuries are very chronic and have sent many good players to the sideline permanently. I hope he has better luck than Moose Johnston and Michael Irvin did.

Exactly. Peyton's got a wife and two kids he needs to be thinking about. If it were me, I would have hung it up and taken a coaching job or analyst gig at one of the major networks.

Me too, but neither of us is Peyton Manning. I just hope he hangs 'em up before he ends up in a wheelchair.
