08:12 AM ET 07.18 | As the deadline nears, the focus of speculation narrows on where players might end up for the home stretch. Ryan Dempster's first choice is the Los Angeles Dodgers and his second is the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources. Whether the veteran right-hander would allow the Cubs to trade him to another team could be determined in the next several days. Dempster, as a player with 10 years of service, the last five with the same team, has the right to veto any deal. The Cubs are trying to move him before his next start, sources say, but Dempster could delay the process by nixing potential trades before [July 31]. ... [Dempster] is good friends with Dodgers left-hander Ted Lilly.

Between these two teams the Braves makes more sense if you are just looking for minor league players.

The Cubs should look to Atlanta. The Braves have a lot of young pitching talent. Wonder what they would give up for Dumpster?

He can try to keep it going regardless of where he starts.

I don't think the Dodgers have much to offer, unless salary relief is the main thing desired. I think the Cubs are more likely interested in picking up minor leaguers

i say we trade sean gilmartin and 2 more mid level prospects for dempster.... then trade martin prado and bourn and 2 lower level prospects for justin upton.... bourn wont resign with us neway so we might as well get upton to is 23 and still on his way to be a star and he signed for long term.... then we trade some 3 more mid to lower prospects for carlos quentin to be in left field to replace prado..put upton in center to replace bourn....

I think Dempster could very well end up in Detroit. The Tigers could send, for example, Rick Porcello and a younger pitcher in exchange for Dempster. The Tigers, after signing Prince Fielder, are all in this season. A triumvrate of Verlander-Dempster-Scherzer in the playoffs might be tough on the opposition.

My second likely destination would be Washington. Lombardozzi and a pitching prospect for Jeff Baker and Dempster? Just a thought.

I'd rather hang on to Porcello, honestly. I wouldn't be surprised if Turner, Oliver and Brantly -- some of the Tigers' top prospects -- would get the job done. Two potential Major League pitchers and a good catching prospect.
I have a feeling no deal will be made with the Tigers, though. I'm sure Epstein is trying to pry Castellanos away.

The Orioles need another quality starter, and they have a slew of young arms at the AAA level with some major league experience. Jake Arietta is a potential star if he would stop thinking too much and pitching too fine; Zach Britton is with the big club now; Tommy Hunter should be; etc., etc., etc. Or how about Mark Reynolds or Chris Davis as trade bait? Point is: they're in the race and have addressed their offense. Now they need pitching.

Case in poit: Starters are a revolving door -- Britton last nigght and maybe Hunter tonight. Desperation for Buck?
Quote: "Baltimore (46-44) has lost six of seven overall and nine of 12 on the road to drop 10 games behind AL East-leading New York.
"We just need to put it back together," shortstop J.J. Hardy said. "It's been a rough couple of games. We need to turn it around."
With Jason Hammel (right knee surgery) out for at least a month, the Orioles are expected to recall Tommy Hunter (3-4, 6.11) from Triple-A Norfolk to take the hill Wednesday. The right-hander gave up a combined 24 runs over his last five starts spanning 28 1-3 innings before being moved to the bullpen and ultimately sent down June 30.
He's been hit especially hard on the road, going 0-3 with an 8.07 ERA over six starts.
Hunter, though, beat Liriano during an 8-2 home victory April 7, allowing two unearned runs over seven-plus innings. Liriano yielded six runs and a season-high eight hits over four innings in that game, dropping to 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA in this series.

you want them to trade Prado for lower level prospects, and then get carlos quentin to replace him in LF? that's crazy.
