08:12 AM ET 07.19 | Dwight Howard, who has spent much of his offseason in the area, may soon find a way to stay in L.A. [Howard] has long coveted the Brooklyn Nets as his next landing spot, but after a summer filled with daily rumors of four-team trade proposals, the six-time All-Star has moved on from his Big Apple infatuation and is locked in on joining the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell RealGM. ... The Lakers are reportedly ready to make the trade, but first need assurance from Howard that he will commit to the team long-term. Sources say Howard is "excited" about the opportunity to play for the Lakers and will re-sign with the team when his contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Dwight will have to be assigned a new number. '12' was Shannon Brown's number and we're going to retire it...
Okay, poor attempt at humor!

For all the talk of wanting to be a free agent he's now willing to reup with the Lakers? Man this Howard dude is a punky reggae party. On the real though why will the Lakers do this. Yes I know Bynum is immature with knee problems but he's young with a good back. Howard on the other hand has back problems. When the back goes all's gone. If the opportunity cost of getting Howard is losing Bynum it's not worth it. Don't do it Lakers... Howard is damaged goods. The fact that he'll sign in tells me his back is letting go. I see red my dear Laker fans. Don't go down with this ship...

I would hate to see Andrew Bynum leave, he has shown that he will become a very dominate center in the league and a move like trading places because the opinions are that the Lakers are better with Howard maybe all that's is needed to spurn Bynum to greatness.

I think both Howard & Bynum would have to agree to a new contract for this to work.

If this deal goes through the Cavs better make sure they get a guarantee in writing that Bynum will sign a long term deal, don't be surprised if this is a replay of the Lebron debacle if they don't let Bynum have his way and keep them in the playoff/Championship race.

+1. But if he does sign, LA is probably the favorite in the west.

It will be interesting to see what the Cavs give up in the trade. Seems like Cleveland is finally pulling themselves together.
