The Angels' odd man out if Hunter stays

08:16 AM ET 07.20 | If Torii Hunter makes it clear he's willing to re-sign with the Angels, and likely for a discount, the team's future becomes a little less cloudy. [Hunter] told the Los Angeles Times that the Angels are the "only team I want to play for" and that money "will not be an issue" in his contract negotiations. If that's the case -- and if the Angels truly intend to keep outfielder Peter Bourjos rather than trade him -- then the odd man could be designated hitter Kendrys Morales, who will be entering his final year of arbitration. The Angels could trade or non-tender Morales. Hunter would become the fourth outfielder and share the DH role with Vernon Wells, whom the Angels, of course, also would love to trade.

What a easy decision this is, get younger and save payroll by releasing Wells and Hunter.

That would certainly make them a "younger" team, but it wouldn't reduce payroll since they are on the books for Wells' obnoxious contract.

I still can't believe the Angels took on Wells' contract. What a gift that was for the Blue Jays.

Wells is still a good glove CF. With Trumbo, Bourjos, Trout in the outfield, the obvious answer would be to keep the best of either Hunter or Wells. This the same reason why they released Abreu earlier this year. If Hunter is willing to take less, then he would be the key guy. Someone is always willing to pick up a big contract hence the Angels with Wells from the Blue Jays or White Sox with Rios from the Jays. The Yankees may be in the market for an outfielder with Gardner going down for the season. They would get a GG CF, and a bat that may produce in a hitter friendly field.
Trying to trade Morales should have happened when they signed Pujlos.

saw Hunter quote in another article, said he would take less, "I'd take 10 million", almost fell off my chair laughing. If anyone gives him 10mil next year, he'll be another wells-type, untraceable and not worth it - give him $4mil maximum.

Hunter has stated he will take a huge discount to stay. Wells is already gone.

Keep Hunter as a DH and occasional outfielder, stuck with Wells, so use him as a defensive replacement for Trumbo and emergency starter, trade Morales for what you can get--he is tradeable (unlike Wells) and probably has more value than Hunter. Sounds like a good plan--unless the angels need a high-end starter right now. Morales won't bring that on his own; maybe as part of a package though.

I remember when Hunter said that he would one day go back to the Twins once they had an outdoor stadium. He's getting so old that he's starting to forget things.

Why does anyone say anything to the fact that Wells is gone or get rid of him. His contract is ridiculous and no one is going to take it on. The Angels can get rid of him but not the contract. And to me that is the issue since it can put the budget in a bind while still having very little in trading chips.

this past winter the halos were too positive about their rotation, not any more, the angels did had great motivation in this past winter about their new first baseman pujols not any more, you see there are things that you can't change, angels rotation has gone pitching backwards after 3 months of baseball the halos starters hadn't been able to win that many games any more, santana has lost as many games, dan haren and jerome williams had combine 15 games as a lost games, at this point the angels can't have any rest knowing that even weaver could fail on any schedule game, THE ANGELS DO HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM ON THE PITCHING AND HITTING SIDE!!!

AYBAR has been a disaster in the halos lineup,
KENDRICK has been playing as if he doesn't care about the game any more,
hunter plays well only when he feels like it and most of the times he would swing at the first pitch only to get back to the bench right away,
CALLASPO has been playing on and off play good in one game next thing you know he would go 08 in two games, pete bourjos plays once at month and no player can contribute with such little time in the halos lineup,
MORALES still can't find his timming and at times it seems as if his mechanics are off, the angels can't even trade him with all his poor performance,
IZTURIS plays once a week and sometimes don't play at all,
ALL THIS PLAYERS DO THE OPPOSITE FROM WHAT THEY DO PROMISE AT THE MOMENT THEY DO SIGN A LONG TERM DEAL,
GET PAY WELL AND PERFORM AS LITTLE AS YOU CAN!!!
