09:29 AM ET 07.21 | The revived Pirates are looking for help to win the Central, and one of their top scouts has been trailing the Cubs the last week in Chicago and St. Louis. One veteran that interests them is left-hander Paul Maholm, a popular former Pirates pitcher who came to the Cubs as a free agent after Pittsburgh declined a $9.75 million option. Maholm, who is 4-0 with a 0.89 ERA over his last five starts, is owed only $1.5 million the rest of 2012, an affordable figure for the small-market Pirates.

It seems like every day we hear about another team scouting someone on the Cubs pitching staff. If they were all that good, the Cubs wouldn't have a 38-54 record.

if you as a pitcher do have a poor season and your contract its for 9 millions any team would likely drop you off from their roster, but if you become a reliable player in the future then that team who kick you out from their roster would reconsidered your abilities as a player plus the contract for 1.5 its much better than the contract for 9 millions!!

Starting pitching hasn't been the issue with the Cubs this year. It's a lack of timely hitting and bullpen meltdowns. Garza, Dempster, and Malholm can help any contender they are traded to.

if the cubs trade maholm to the pirates then the cubs are the ones who should ask any top prospects from the pirates, after all is the pirates who are in need of a reliever or starter pitching!!!

the cubs do have good starters if the team can't become a conssistent winner that's because the offense fall a sleep or they are playing as a triple AAA team, without a run support and with a poor approach in every game no pitcher would be able to be a tough pitcher in that team, offense and diffense its a most in every team!!

the angels could use some pitching help, because honestly they are really in the hole not only in a funk but in deep hole just know that 4 starters are underperforming soo bad that every time they are due to pitch they faill miserable and with all this negative results those unreliable pitchers drag farther down their own team, as its santana, haren, williams, richards!!!!

the d'backs are a team that should be a tough contender, but when they did play against the cubs were swept and after that series the d'back played against the reds and won two out of 3 games, how can you explain that to me?? i mean why would you play poor against a lowly team as the cubs???

The Pirates had Malholm before. He is at best a mediocre pitcher. The Pirates could use another big bat in their lineup.

Maholm's been lights out for a while now. His ERA lately is ridiculous. Anyone who picks him up will be getting a real boost to their rotation. The Cubs should get a nice prospect for him.
