09:34 AM ET 07.21 | However the next year unfolds for Dwight Howard, the All-Star center won't have to spend much time at the 99-cent store. But he could be passing up big bucks in several scenarios. According to an independent NBA salary cap expert and IT director at UC Irvine who crunched the numbers, the most lucrative decision would be for Howard to re-sign with the team he is playing for at the end of next season. In that instance, Howard could sign a five-year maximum deal worth $116.8 million that included annual raises of 7.5%. If Howard departed for another team, he could sign for only four years and $86.7 million, receiving raises of 4.5% each year. According to the salary cap expert's calculations, if Andrew Bynum signed a maximum, five-year contract with his current team at the end of the 2012-13 season, he could make up to $101.9 million over the life of the deal. If Bynum signed with a new team at that point, those figures would drop to four years and a maximum of $75.7 million over the life of the contract, factoring in 4.5% annual raises.

The Magic are determined not to lose D-12 and D-12 is more determined to keep the spotlight on him. He and his agent are not on the same sheet of music.

I doubt they would suffer.

Orlando is going to field as many offers as possible. It would be foolish to make a deal in haste. Unless the perfect deal materializes...wait. More teams will see what the best offer is on the table and who knows which team will decide they can beat it.

But and it's a big but, will Howard play for "any" team??

No matter where Howard (and for that matter Bynum) is playing at year's end he will opt out. That is clear. The question is: Once Howard makes it to free agency will the team holding his Bird rights agree to a sign and trade? I believe Houston is the ideal team to trade for Howard because they are the team most willing to let him walk and receive nothing in return. Houston wants top twenty player or three or four years at the top of the lottery.
