Michael Jordan draws crowds to celebrity tourney

10:20 AM ET 07.21 | American Century Championship officials didn't know when -- or even if -- to expect the circus. There was a rumor Wednesday night that Michael Jordan might not show up for the popular celebrity golf tournament, which he had played in 16 of the previous 22 times, and he didn't participate in the pro-am Thursday, as usual. But 45 minutes before his tee time Friday morning, Jordan generated a buzz as only he can when he strode to the driving range in his custom-branded golf outfit. He last dribbled a basketball on an NBA court in 2003, yet, at age 49, Jordan still is the ultimate ringleader. Fans hustled toward him with jerseys, magazines and pieces of paper in tow, and the other celebrities all made a point to stop and say hello, even interrupting him during his practice session. The entourage was surprisingly small, just his fiancee, Yvette Prieto, and another friend, but the Jordan Rules have taken on a different tenor. Someone in a cart shuttled drinks to him in an insulated cup several times during the round, and he was escorted around the course by two sheriffs. Even NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin presumed Jordan pulled some strings to get him an invite. "Michael suggested it," Hamlin said of his first invitation to the event. "Whatever Michael says goes."

Michael Jordan is better than anyone in any enviroment period. Kobe`s recent comments are totally "stupig", like him who can only entice women like on kobe can. Really? Nobody can take this %$#%%#@#^ seriously! Michael Jordan is class period, the jury already( civil suit) in Colorado has already spoken even though we did`nt hear of it, there was a pay-off.

I thought perhaps he showed up at the tournament wearing nothing but his Hanes underwear. Thank goodness I was wrong.

I'm rooting for Scott. Seems like a good guy and has a beautiful stroke. Also, I'm sure Williams would love to stick it to Eldrick again.

So glad the final pairing is not Woods and Scott. The commentators would have focused more on Stevie and Tiger's split than the game itself. I swear they were crying when McDowell birdied and Woods bogeyed.

He's using Tiger's old swing because Butch Harmon only has one swing he can teach. But if you can perfect it you can win tourneys.

oh well yes he draws a crowd just like any other celebrity, but i have watched MJplay golf several times to make it look like he had the rules backwards-see who can get the highest score!did he ever play well or just bet on the game more than anyone else?from what i have seen he needs to apologize to Charles.at least Charles has an excuse with that ridiculous swing.

July 22, 2012  03:42 AM ET

MJ will have a WINNING team when he lets go of the money and buys back the CHARLOTTE HORNETS name.he has only to do that and as they say-"they will come"

July 22, 2012  02:52 PM ET

Looks like the Sun Times still has its lips firmly attached to Jordan's behind....

July 22, 2012  03:00 PM ET

The fans did the same thing to Justin Timberlake at his tournament in Vegas last year, and no article about HIM? And I dare say, JT has a better game...
