Cubs losing best trade chip?

08:40 AM ET 07.22 | When Matt Garza left Saturday night's game against the Cardinals after the third inning and TV cameras caught him flexing his right wrist in the dugout, it looked like another example of what Lou Piniella would term a "Cubbie Occurrence." Garza's injury was described as right triceps cramping. He called it a "weird-ass injury." While the Cubs breathed a sigh of relief when X-rays proved negative, Garza admitted he "could barely extend my arm." A trip to the disabled list couldn't be discounted, and it could hinder a potential trade. Only the Cubs could lose their best trading chip to an injury right before the deadline. A report on Foxsports.com said the Dodgers are "unlikely" to come up with a package for Cubs starter Ryan Dempster, though they remain interested in Garza, who left Saturday's game after three innings with cramping in his right triceps.

How does the Dodgers not wanting to meet the Cubs price for Dempster = losing their best trade chip? Other teams still want him, or they can reduce their trade demands and still probably cut a deal with the Dodgers. And Garza is probably a better trade chip due to being signed for another year and a half--they just want to move Dempster first so they can say "we got this much for Dempster, so for Garza we should get more."

I heard that they are wanting huge talent for Garza like 3 or 4 top prospects which most teams arent going to do these days.

They're referring to the fact that Garza left the game with an injury.

Ah--I thought it turned out it was just a cramp--story must have run before the Cubs announced that, or maybe they changed their story later and I missed it.

Theo, just deal both of these guys please. Get a bunch of young guys and continue the rebuilding process. Cubs fans have waited over a 100 years already...they can wait 2-3 more.

Eh...why not keep Garza around one more year if we don't get the right deal? Heck, maybe we could actually try holding on to a decent pitcher and put some pieces around him.

Maybe you lure other teams to the table with Garza and then try and sell them on Dempster.

Should have traded him to the Sox for a couple of prospects. Whoops.
