Paterno's name to remain on library

08:44 AM ET 07.22 | Work crews are outside the Penn State University football stadium this morning in preparation for the removal of the famed yet embattled statue of the late Joe Paterno. University President Rodney Erickson confirmed this morning that the larger-than-life-sized statue would be taken down. The statement follows days of discussion, deliberation and debate within the Penn State community and beyond. The public statement from Mr. Erickson calls the statue of Mr. Paterno a "lightning rod of controversy and national debate" since a special investigative commission determined that Penn State leadership - including famed football Coach Paterno - had contributed by default to the ongoing child sex abuse by convicted felon and former PSU coach Jerry Sandusky. However, the name of the university's library will be unchanged. The statement reads: "...the Paterno Library symbolizes the substantial and lasting contributions to the academic life and educational excellence that the Paterno family has made to Penn State University. The library remains a tribute to Joe and Sue Paterno's commitment to Penn State's student body and academic success, and it highlights the positive impacts Coach Paterno had on the University. Thus I feel strongly that the library's name should remain unchanged."

NCAA just announces "unprecedented" punitive measures will be made Monday. Shocked they acted, but glad they did so.

If only JoePa cared even half as much about those children as he seemed to care about his legacy and some people seem to care about a stupid statue...

What is truly amazing is how many people are still vehemently defending this enabler.

Of all things, it was on Colin Cowherd's show that I heard a bit of wisdom on this. Someone called in and said that, while the statue was built to honor him, he has proven that he is not worthy of that honor. Tear it down. Statue, library, everything.

It's true that the only wisdom that you'll get on Cowherd's show is when someone calls in. It sure as hell isn't coming from Cowherd himself.

I wonder if "unprecedented" means the death penalty to the football program. While I believe there should be harsh punishment, killing the football program might be unfair; aren't all the people who were involved in this scandal no longer affiliated with PSU?

Since there were no NCAA bylaws infractions, I think it's the reach that's unprecedented. And, yes, in football terms it seems the offenders are gone.

Should rename Library "Center for Pedo's learning".

I agree. I think the "death penalty" would be a litte harsh. I say put them on probation, somewhere in line of what USC got, as IMO Penn State is definitely a "Lack of institutional control" case. The players always suffer, but the NCAA has to do something.

I know we all have went thru this a few days ago, but do we really know for sure, there were no NCAA bylaws infractions commited?

Agreed. The NCAA should let the courts and the DoE handle things. btw, news sources now reporting that the statue is going to come down.

The Football Program benefited as Sandusky exploited and molested kids. During this time the college President allowed children to be raped constantly for years and during this time they made money.
This is a crime period and for all those crying that the statue was taken down is nothing more idiots. And I would never want to be friends or acknowledge knowing them.
