09:32 AM ET 07.22 | After all of the moves the Nets have made since free agency began July 1, they have two roster spots left open. Nets general manager Billy King would like to fill one of them with Andrei Kirilenko. In an interview on Fox Sports Radio Saturday, King said the Nets have been talking with Kirilenko, who is preparing to play with the Russian National Team in the Olympics after starring last season for Russia's top club team, CSKA Moscow. "He still can play," King said of Kirilenko during the radio interview. "He would be a great piece to add to us, and give us more depth at the forward spot." But a source downplayed the Nets' chances of signing the versatile forward, saying they would be "surprised" if Kirilenko chose to play in Brooklyn next season.

he understands the need to try an win now. They are going to a new arena with impatient NYersAlso 99.9% of NYers DESPISE dolan and if Brooklyn gets good, fast, I believe there will be a decent chunk of NY fans that will jump ship.....I respect the hell out of him saying F you to the lux tax as, he is a billionaire and understands that you need to spend $ to make $

well spending doesnt always make you....Cuban said he has only turned a profit once since owning the Mavs....Not sure what all goes into that....But i think Cuban is a pretty bright guy and sees where the new CBA is taking everyone....and if you are spending more money than is coming in than thats not the best business model...

Brooklyn has a very large Russian population, as do parts of Queens and NYC. It wouldn't be Linsanity or anything, but AK would be a "homie" to a huge chunk of the potential city fan base that has remained untapped. He could sell at least a few seats as long as he's competent.

From a recent "DailyDime". I thought this was interesting and Cuban showed foresight. The dawn of the new CBAThose with their fingers on the purse strings are still acclimating to the new collective bargaining agreement. Many changes won't take effect until next summer, but the contours of the new deal are being felt. Shorter contracts that create more player movement are obvious consequences, but some subtler features have surfaced as well."You want to be one of two kinds of teams," one executive said. "Either be a very good team that manages the gap between the [salary] cap and the [luxury] tax, or be the last man standing with [salary cap] room so you can take advantage of teams that are spending and can't afford to go into the tax. Do that and people are going to come to you like the sky is falling."Understanding dualities like these will allow a front office to find value in a marketplace that will be increasingly flooded because teams are moving away from long contracts."Look at Chris Kaman," one cap-savvy basketball operations staffer said. "That guy gets a long-term deal in the last CBA. Now, he's at one year, $8 million."

Nice post. Your point about teams clearing cap space might turn into the biggest/best strategy for all small market teams- it'll give them the ability to get top players either because no one has room for them cap wise or because someone has to trade one for peanuts to get under the cap.
