Why Browns haven't signed Richardson

09:35 AM ET 07.22 | There's been no movement yet on a deal for No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson even though the two players drafted ahead of him, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, have signed their four-year deals, a league source said. Offset language is believed to be the only real issue with Richardson's contract, because the total amount of the deal and signing bonus are pretty well set under the new rookie slotting system. The contract will also be fully guaranteed. Richardson will receive about $20.4 million over four years, including a signing bonus of about $13.4 million. The problem for the Browns is that neither Luck, the first overall pick, nor Griffin received offset language in their contracts. Offset language allows the team that drafted a player to save some money in the event the player is released and signs with another team while still owed money by his original team.

This doesn't sound like an insurmountable problem. I wonder why the team is pushing it so hard--are they planning to release him in the next couple of years if he can still play? Sign him and get him into camp...

He's going to make the Browns immediately better. Sign him!

I would love to sit in on some of their discussions and hear the reasons they make some of the decisions they do.

Jim Brown doesn't think he's so good

I will defer to Jim Brown's opinion--he is likely a better judge of talent than I am. But offset money only applies, really, if the kid is a total bust and they have to release him, and another team then signs him. If they think he might be a total bust, why spend the #3 pick on him? Most likely he will be somewhere between pretty good and average, and that isn't a reason for cutting him early.

Jim Brown is the greatest football player ever. Period. However he also sounds like a very bitter man. How does Richerdson not make the Browns instantly better? Weeden is going to need all the help he can get, or he's going to be on IR before mid season.

HA-HA-HA don't listen to Jim Brown, seriously. His massive ego is still hurt over the fact that the organization wants little to nothing to do with him anymore. He's not being on the level about what he really thinks of TR. This is just his way of getting back at the organization. He's nothing more than bitter and old.

Right on the money. Brown never could, never will allow for anyone to cast any shadows on the great Jim's reputation. *He* is Mr. Browns. Thing is that he is not just "bitter and old." He's ALWAYS been bitter. Then, again, he thought - and he was right to think - that he didn't get either the money or the respect he deserved for being the great player that he was. It must be very galling to him to see and hear all the hoopla about Richardson who will probably be the best back that the Browns have had since Leroy Kelly. (I don't put the Pruitts at all in the same category.) He just makes things worse with his attitude though. He will die bitter without a doubt.

He'll get into camp. Like the article said, the money is not the issue. If it means changing a few words, it should get done eventually.

This is why my Browns are the Clowns. Pay the kid you d@mn idiots!

I disagree, this isn't a Clown move. What the kid wants if he's a bust is to not only receive his guaranteed money from the Browns, but to receive whatever he might make from another team on top of it and the Browns still take the full salary cap hit. What other job in the world can you get and you still get paid full wages even though you suck?

The guaranteed money should be sufficient for anybody to accept, why put the Browns organization over a financial barrel if Richardson doesn't work out. Could blow out a knee in preseason and never be the same (see year two of Cadillac Williams, came out looking like a stud then knee problems), sucks but its reality and first and foremost the NFL is a business.

The other side of the coin, though, is that the Browns management is wanting to hedge the bet they made with number 3 (widely held to be the most complete running back in the draft) in a way that the Colts and the Skins did not hedge their bets with picks 1 and 2.

Why are the Browns so concerned about what happens if they release the number 3 pick of the draft before his rookie contract is done?

Because they are afraid they screwed up.

QUOTE(#12):

Great point abut Brown being bitter, for many decades now. And of course I want TR to succeed in Cleveland, they deserve a break. I think you are right that Jim Brown will die a bitter man though. I'm not sure if he knows how to be anything but bitter.

It's Funny he never said anything Bad about Ernie Davis, Leroy Kelly, Gregg Pruitt, Mike Pruitt, or Kevin Mack, now with all due respect If you think Jim Brown is bitter Today, you should have seen him then, today Jim is Considered a Calmed Down Old Man, so the Question is, the Browns are Balking, could old Jim be Right?

If anyone with any football knowledge watched college football, you can see he is an extreme talent. As much as I love what Jim Brown did for the Browns and Cleveland, he is wrong and looks bad.

Ron Dayne Baby, couldn't Miss!! Would you like a list of can't miss running backs, who were drafted in the First round and didn't make it? Or would you prefer to look them up Yorself?
