Miami's Randy Shannon has a good relationship with most local coaches, but North Miami Beach's Jeff Bertani said, ``It would be difficult for me to send a kid to UM now. The trust is broken.''

Funny that they don't include the part of the article that says *why* the trust is broken. Shannon seems like a good guy to me. I hope for Miami's sake he's a good coach, too.

after 1 year?

wow

A player was redshirted after being told he had a torn meniscus and he said that he didn't. The player is transferring to Western Michigan or something like that.

If you click on the italicized "Miami Herald" above, it will take you to the full story.

Just a tip.

It's only a gossip column, and not a very good one at that.

Why is a freshman complain'n about being red shirted....Shannon is trying to get rid of the last guys players and get his players in...is red shirting that bad....dude this isnt basketball....u just cant jump into the league

January 13, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Angelo: He's not complaining that he was redshirted. He's allegedly complaining that he was lied to about the reason he was being redshirted.

SVT: and having seen fannation's articles, that's saying a lot!!!

Pathetic how generalized (and incorrect) that headline makes it seem. Randy has an INCREDIBLE network of relationships in South Florida, about as good as anyone could have.... heck, that's why we hired him.

What a ridiculous article. So one coach has his panties in a wad over something with likely no basis to it. Who cares, send your 'studs' to Western Michigan then, shows their talent level anyways, no?

January 13, 2008  05:02 PM ET

I would think he was red-shirted because the coach thought he needed one more season to hone his skills and develop before he was ready to play. Sounds like he was impatient and not willing to bide his time. Agree with For_the_U - if this kid is going to Western Michigan, then perhaps he does not have enough talent to shake it at the U anyway.
One doubtful incident and the Herald is saying Shannon has lost trust? That's kinda exaggerated. Anyway, nasty things are usually said when a team has a bad year. Win a few more games next season and suddenly this will be all forgotten.

For_The_U i just have a simple question for u.... When you say "Randy has an INCREDIBLE network of relationships in South Florida, about as good as anyone could have.... heck, that's why we hired him." You say "we" like you are part of the team or the AD at Miami. I'm quite sure this is false.

I agree. The Herald is grasping at straws, because they know their readership is frustrated with the 'Canes failures in Shannon's first season. With all the success that the four national championship coaches had at the U, the expectations are pretty high. Shannon has the right attitude, he is pulling in the right players. Ultimately, that will translate to success on the field.

January 13, 2008  07:27 PM ET

Listen...a kid probably went there and was immediately assigned a paroll officer...got spooked a little. Common procedure at "The U", right?

January 13, 2008  08:06 PM ET

One high school coach gets upset at Coach Shannon and all of a sudden he's "losing trust in Miami"?? C'mon, SI, you're better than that. Aren't you?

January 13, 2008  10:53 PM ET

The Tallahassee Democrat and the Gainesville Sun,...I have searched and search through the 2 mentioned papers' archives to no avail. Try as I might, I simply have not seen either of those 2 papers releasing irrelevant, 1-sided, negative, slanderous snippets of information on their local schools out to the masses in the manner you have above. UF and FSU does not have to deal with this. UM does.

Dont give me the "just doing my job", "just reporting the news" line. If you are going to report it, do your homework on it. Know about the fight he had with a player on the team and report that also. Report about his constant sulking while on the team. Report how he came in running a 4.7,...if you are not new to football, you know that a true freshman cornerback that runs 4.7 or worse will see much playing time.

Report how Randy Shannon promises NO PLAYER ANYTHING aside from a great education to prevent lopsided articles such as yours. Last, but not least, report the way he saved this kid an extra year of his college career by benching him. As of now he still has 4 years of eligibility he can use elsewhere, thanks to Randy Shannon.

A random former coach and true freshman upset with a lack of playing time,...wow. Shocking news. Startling. What a revelation. I now see why the Sun Sentinel has been an attractive, growing alternative for years.

With all due respect Mr. Jackson,...you get paid to do a job. By all means, earn your money and do it.

He's only been there one year no way have they lost anything with him

January 14, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Why is he losing trust? Because the player from north miami beach pushed a coach and got in a fight with another UM player? The same player that says he tested at 4.39, but when he got to Miami he ran a 4.79. Is that why? Shannon is going to turn this around with hard work and great players, not players that are babies

January 14, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Doug Wiggins came in with a good amount of hype after a super career at NMB. I'm sure the biggest reason for his transfer is that he couldn't climb up the depth charts. And with another good class of DB's coming in, his playing future was in doubt. Good luck to him. He has a lot of potential and I'm sure he will get plenty of opportunity at WMU, even a chance at his preferred position of QB.

January 14, 2008  08:41 AM ET

What trust? The trust that the kid can bring his drug clients with him? That he will get no less than $1,500 per week from boosters?

Damn you Donna Shalala..DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!
