10:12 AM ET 07.22 | With the Dodgers appearing reluctant to meet the Chicago Cubs' asking price for potential two-month rental pitcher Ryan Dempster, they could soon turn their focus to players they could retain beyond this season. Two players on the Dodgers' radar are first baseman Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and pitcher James Shields of the Tampa Bay Rays, according to people familiar with the team's thinking. The Dodgers aren't actively negotiating deals for Morneau or Shields, one of the people said.

So...they aren't actually trying to get either player right now?

July 22, 2012  10:18 AM ET

Morneau has managed to play in most of the Twins games this year, although his production is way down. Might be worth a gamble that he has healed from the concussions and that with a change of scenery he will be productive again. At 31 he could have several more good seasons ahead.

yep--lol--but they might be getting ready to think about talking to someone about them. This is almost news.

Shields would be an interesting addition to any team. The guy is a true No. 1 or 2 starter, fairly young, and quite good.

What exactly do the Dodgers have to offer for him?

July 22, 2012  11:55 AM ET

Dodgers are desperate for hitting, should get VWells from Angels, w/Angels paying part of his salary - u can trash wells, but he's way better than Uribe and other no names Dodgers have at .220

Why would they take Wells? The only place they could put him is LF, so they'd still have Uribe at 3B and Loney at 1B. Unless Anaheim is willing to eat all of Wells' $21M contract, LA is better off leaving Abreu in left (who they're basically getting for free) and trying to get a better corner infielder.

the dodgers are with the better posibilities in getting a top starter, not to mentioned this dodgers blue do have the richers owners in LA.

My thought exactly; a 'manufactured' story.
"Well, they've shifted their focus...er...on the radar...er..looking at them...uh, might have interest...I have nothing else to report, so I made this crap up" .

July 22, 2012  12:18 PM ET

the dodgers have better prospects than the angels, if tyhe angels do and would like to get shields then they really need to give up howe kendrick and richards for shields, there its nothing else to do lets not forget that angels rotation its a complete disaster!!!

July 22, 2012  12:21 PM ET

the angels still aren't completely sure about santana's collapse in this season, the halos have been deniable to accept and agree that there are 4 starters WHO can't PERFORM at 100% in the mound, SANTANA, HAREN, WILLIAMS ,RICHARDS,

July 22, 2012  12:23 PM ET

angels can secure a win in every turn from weaver and sometimes from CJ WILSON, but if some the under performed pitchers as its,,

refuse to acknowledge the tough situation in the halos rotation, its like closing your eyes to avoid been seen by any other executive,,,

July 22, 2012  12:28 PM ET

after the ASG the angels record its 3 wins and 6 loses today 7/22/12 would be a tough test for dan haren and if this guy continue in decline in the rotation what else can the halos do??? can't win championships without a solid pitching!!!
