08:13 AM ET 07.23 | Brett Lawrie took Jon Lester deep on the first pitch of Sunday's game at Fenway, and then things really went downhill for Lester, who allowed 11 runs and four home runs before departing in the fifth inning. Over his last three starts, Lester has been unable to pitch more than 41/3 innings, while allowing 21 earned runs on 25 hits and five home runs "It's never good. It's embarrassing," Lester said after the Sox were swept by the Blue Jays and traded places with last-place Toronto in the American League East. "I've let my team down a lot this year," said Lester. ... "It's hard for me to walk around this clubhouse and look guys in the eye right now. I'm not pitching well and I'm not doing my job."

Lester has been a head case for two years now. Not only has he allowed himself to get fat, but his body language on the mound (towards the umps & his teammates) is awful. The fighters mentality that he had when he came back from his cancer scare seems to have been replaced with a whiny attitude.

Yes they do. Everytime it looks like they're going to turn a corner and start playing good ball for an extened run they just fall apart and play like they did this past weekend. The only thing they have going for them is there is still two months left and none of the wild card teams seem to play well for more than a week at a time.

The Red Sox are 13 - 23 in games started by Beckett and Lester. How messed up is that?

Ben Cherington is in a bind. He has two front line pitchers in Lester and Beckett who probably can't be moved due to contract and performance issues, another high-priced pitcher in DiceK who can't be moved due to physical issues, and John Lackey who's contract is untradeable.
Time to dump some pitching, but Theo's legacy of contracts that are not saleable is a real issue.
Sox may suck for a few years until they shed these guys and get some younger pitching talent.

Why is Lester pitching so horribly?

I'll take the $64,000 question for $200 Alex.

Man, the Red Sox have a lot of money invested in a very subpar rotation. Lester, Beckett, Dice K, Lackey...I would trade them all to Oakland for two of their young guys.
