08:18 AM ET 07.24 | In the wake of continued struggles at the top of its rotation, Boston is apparently focused on acquiring a starting pitcher before the July 31 trade deadline. The Red Sox most recently have expressed interest in Miami Marlins pitchers Josh Johnson, according to a league source. The Red Sox also were interested in Anibal Sanchez, the source said, but Sanchez was traded to the Detroit Tigers on Monday evening. The Marlins sent Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante to Detroit in exchange for top pitching prospect Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers. ... The Red Sox have scored a major league-leading 479 runs this season but own a 48-48 record and are in last place in the AL East.

"The Red Sox have scored a major league-leading 479 runs" That's an illusion from occasionally beating up on #4 and #5 starters. Time to let the dream go. In contrast to playoff starved fans in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, Red Sox fans do not particularly care to see their Sox make a run to be the visiting team in a play-in wild card game. Ben should use that fan capital and blow it all up.
