Georgia prepared to pursue Penn State players

08:21 AM ET 07.24 | Penn State may have avoided the "death penalty" on Monday, but NCAA sanctions were severe enough that players are being allowed to transfer without having to sit out a year. Will Georgia pounce? Possibly so. Coach Mark Richt said at a fans' "UGA Day" Monday night, "Some colleges are going to be interested in some of their players, and we're one of those schools. It's pretty well-documented that we're under our 85[-scholarship] limit. We'll try to get in touch with some of these young men and see if they're interested." ... [Richt] said he and his assistants already have gone over over Penn State's two-deep roster. But he was vague -- probably intentionally -- on what (or how many) players Georgia would pursue.

Are these transfers going to count against the 85 limit this year? I had heard that they might not until next year.

If you have 85 now and pick up one of Penn State's players to get to 86, then that is ok. But then you can only have 84 next year.

I would think the "top tier" schools will be selective. Schools in conferences like the MAC, C-USA, etc, less so. Those teams can probably upgrade a nearly all positions! Team chemistry, that's another issue.

Not sure this isn't worse, Doc. Death penality is a complete shut-down and then start-up with full scholly's.
Heard yesterday that the kids that will make up Penn State's first unrestricted recruiting class are currently in the 4th grade! OUCH

Hell, just let Penn State join the SEC East, they would have a pretty good chance of winning that division. Stirring just a bit!!!

So, question for you Big 10 gurus...Who wins the 2010 game between Ohio State-Penn State? Now both teams have had to vacate this game. Is this a question for Jim Delaney?

Not sure why this is a bad thing. U$C is doing it too as I am sure many other schools are as well.
These kids didn't do anything wrong. Why should they have to live through a 4-year bowl ban and no shot at a conf championship? You not want them to have opportunity to excel? You only get 1 shot at CFB.........

This basically is the death penalty. They are dead for the next decade.

No it doesn't. But USC has paid their dues with their probation/scholarship losses, etc.

Yep. Or they can tough it out at PSU and get their degree. (There are worse things in the world.) They do have a choice. Better than some kids that get screwed over by coaches and/or university and can't move without sanctions.

But, as said earlier, it looks like ncaa will allow schools to go over their current limits to sign psu players.
This is the first year of the scholly losses to USC (they kept appealing), so they haven't paid the dues.
