Only way Cuban can lure Howard and Paul

08:10 AM ET 07.24 | The Mavs, like Dallas' NFL team, are loathe to the concept of rebuilding, but that may be what's happening to some degree. Like Jerry Jones, Mark Cuban will never use the word "rebuild." If fans buy into the fact the Mavericks can again contend for a playoff spot this winter, they will continue spinning the turnstiles. ... Mark Cuban would like to think he can be in the mix for the biggest and best names in free agency next season, the Dwight Howards and Chris Pauls. But his money wasn't rich enough to convince Deron Williams to return home this summer. I think the Mavs would need to go deeper than the second round for Cuban to have a convincing argument to the big names, who all want both the money and the chance for a championship.

'Blue Steel' couldn't get Deron, so for Dwight and Chris I think it's time to show the world 'Magnum'.

2nd round? Right now they look to be a questionable 8 seed.

They may have to but, they are going to need someone to be the face of the franschise, Dirk is like the Nash of Suns (former). Even at his age Dirk is still unguardable, doesnt quit on his team, just an all around skilled good guy. I think any team would be honored to have him. Even with his age his skill set will allow him to play longer in the league and still be effective for yeards to come, he wont loose that jumper of his no time soon. Cuban may not let his golden nugget go.

I still don't understand how Mavs fans were praising Cuban for breaking up his championship team and think it was only going to get better.

Too many teams have only won one title, and even more never haven't won any at all!

Does your moniker refer to Ryan Leaf (thus making you a 1-person fan club)?

If they got CP and Howard, Drik would be a nice fit as the 3rd option.

Types, posts, rox. Make up your mind.

What can Cube get in return 4 Dirk? He's the only scoring threat the Mavs have.

Your Way Or The Highway, Bro?

The Mavs have to keep Dirk. Period.

The Mavs misplayed their hand with Deron Williams. They had too few accessory pieces other than Dirk, and Williams didn't see them as a viable contender.

Thought: If the Mavs had kept Chandler, he could have been part of a deal for Howard. Then, Howard and Williams might have joined forces with Dirk in Dallas. Now, we'll never know.

I do like the Mavs team at this point. They are not Thunder-good, but they will be good this year.
