How Colts might keep Dungy

Jim Irsay hopes coach Tony Dungy is at the forefront when his Indianapolis Colts move into Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2008 season, and the team's owner is prepared to do everything within his power to ensure that's the case. Irsay is receptive to easing Dungy's workload, allowing him to spend more time during the offseason with his family in Tampa. Dungy also might have access to Irsay's private jet so he can commute to Tampa for his son's Friday night football games and other family events.

That may work. No one wants Dungy to leave, but everyone will be happy for him no matter what he chooses.

Waitaminute... Ownership is going to use perks to keep an employee happy? How novel.

Truly one of the good guys in any sport.

Great guy. As Irish said, no matter what he does, everyone will be happy for him.

Tony Dungy is a great guy. He's a family man, which makes the impending retirment seem likely. He always went to his son's basketball game (I played against him many times). He signed the most autographs at training camp and was very personable and friendly. He's awesome. I remember people waiting for 7 hours to get the book autographed. Dungy is the best. I hope Caldwell can do as good of a job as Dungy.

Private Jet? Tony will be back fo sho'

January 13, 2008  10:14 AM ET

He should have done those moves before now. That should be a model for owners to follow. That way we don't hear about tattered and torn coaches families such as the tragedy that happened with Dungy or the travesty that happened with Reid.

January 13, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Dungy and Reid aren't really comparable. The Reid kids were thugs and drugees. Dungy's son was depressed. I agree with boston rob. He'll be back. A private jet is crazy, but it shows how much we want him here.

Irsay and the Colts need to give him whatever he wants in order to keep him. If they can't then the NFL and Colts lost a great one. 100% pure class, that's what Dungy is.

Dungy deserves everything positive in is life after all he has given to his sport...

You're a lucky man (or woman?) BACKLASH. It's rare to meet someone of that stature and not get blown off. Mainly I mean a lot of his players and other NFL players. Dont' have time for the fans anymore.

The colts are going to keep .. Cause he has taken the colts to the super bowl and the playoffs and he has a very good coach.. They should give him a pravite jet and stuff for what he has done for the team..

January 13, 2008  02:45 PM ET

When Irsay offered Dungy the job at Indy, he left a 15 minute message on his machine. Among the many things mentioned was that Tony was the only one Irsay was considering for the job to name his price. Wish more employers would look after their key people the way Irsay does.

The Colts just got beat AT HOME by a backup QB and an LT-Less Charger team....

Are there any Colts fans out there who can explain this????

January 13, 2008  06:14 PM ET

I hope Dungy returns he is a true class act in this league.
