08:02 AM ET 07.26 | Excuse Christian Ponder for wanting to fast-forward directly to Sept. 9. The Vikings quarterback plans to reclaim what he lost at Detroit's Ford Field seven months ago. "That definitely hurt my confidence," Ponder said of his four-turnover game on Dec. 11 of last season, which, combined with a hip pointer, forced Ponder to the bench in favor of Joe Webb. In a recent telephone interview, Ponder said his confidence took a hit throughout the final month of his rookie season, a first for him. The healing process can begin Thursday, July 26, when the Vikings report to camp at Minnesota State Mankato. The offense belongs to Ponder now. His development will be more important than any free-agent signing or draft pick.

It was McNabb...

Need to put that behind you and push on, the best players have amnesia when it comes to bad games.

Welcome to the NFL. You're not the best athlete on the field anymore. Far from it.

Shouldn't practicing against that defense every day give the QB a (love)boat load of confidence?

Well, maybe not as much confidence as you lose practicing with that offense every day.

Ponder This!!!!

This is just the kind of confidence you want from your starting QB going into the season. "The healing process can begin on Thursday...." Great.

He wasn't even close when he was at FSU either.

But he may have been at Colleyville Heritage High School.

Nah, you're right. That's in Texas. They take the game seriously there.

Usually your confidence get's better with playing time and experience. If you regress it's mental, not lack of talent. If it were talent, it would have revealed itself early.

Good point!

But he is good enough to get to the NFL, and most of the college kids he played with and against are not that good. Probably for the first time in his life he is dealing with not knowing if he is good enough to play at this level--and he is doing it on a crappy team, probably also for the first time in his life.

If he looks at it as an opportunity to test himself against the best, his attitude and confidence will be fine. It is his feet, his arm, and his ability to read defenses that may not be up to the task.

Unfortunately the one (mental) can have fatally pernicious effect on the other (talent). How many head-case QBs make it in the NFL?

I'm sure he can solve his problem with.....Geometric logic!

Well, it least it didn't say "...rattled in 2012". Is it too early to call that?
