The most interesting GM in baseball (for now)

08:14 AM ET 07.27 | The Rangers have played as well as anyone for the better part of three seasons, appearing in consecutive World Series to boot. And they would be champions today, if Nelson Cruz had taken a better route on David Freese's fly ball in the ninth inning of Game 6 last year. But he didn't, and we all know what that means: The plan seems less perfect. The manager seems less brilliant. The roster seems less talented. That is absurd, of course. That is also the reality of sports. And that is why, over the next several days, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels will be more fascinating to watch than Mike Trout and Bryce Harper combined. ... [Daniels] must tinker under the hood of a perfectly functional Ferrari and come away with a better sports car.

I think Jon Daniels is one of the brightest people in baseball. He has helped engineer multiple moves that has turned one of sports all-time worst franchises into a perennial winner. As a kid growing up in the metroplex the Cowboys dominated in popularity and merchandise sales...that is no longer true. The Rangers arguably are either as popular as the Cowboys or may be even slightly more in DFW now. An amazing turn around and Jon Daniels is a big part of that transformation.

Daniels has come a long way since giving away Adrian Gonzalez and John Danks for a bag of beans.

.....daniels told me the other day that he just doesnt feel good about this team....thye have not yet found 5th gear, as has been expected all year......despite 2nd best record, still strugglin in most facets (by ranger standards).......so a spark is needed for sure......and if a spark returns them to "normal" stretch mode.....look out.....

These Rangers started out like gang busters but have since slowed down a bit. None of that matters as long as you make the playoffs....new season where anything can happen. The Rangers are going to have a say in how things shake out. Whether they pick up anybody or not.

That is actually an Anaheim Angels logo (of whereever they CLAIM to be from). He was being interviewed sitting infront of the Rangers dugout before a game in Anaheim. Go back to the beach and work on your tan.

A perfectly functional Ferrari?
We lost the horse of our pitching staff and the horse batting third is clueless as hell right now.
A bit more than a tune-up is needed.

The Rangers, to get a frontline pitcher, will almost certainly have to deal one of their good young SS prospects...which is not that bad when you have Elvis Andrus in your big league lineup.
I think the Rangers will get Greinke.

Fortunately, the minor league system is still pretty well stocked. I suspect the Brewers are holding out for Olt to replace Fielder. On the other hand, the Rangers' current first baseman (Moreland), hasn't really covered himself with glory (when he's been playing).

I dont care what Daniels does ... if Hamilton continues on his .175 batting average since Jun 1 ... the rangers might not even make the playoffs.

I just could not do it, if I was a GM. The guy's body breaks down where he abused it for years, and he is a relapse waiting to happen.
Maybe a two year deal. That's it. If he walks, he walks. Frees up money for other areas and to keep other guys.

Hopefully Daniels can swing deals for both a Starting pitcher (Greinke) and an outfield left hand bat (Upton). But knowing Daniels .... he wont do it ... he will keep all those prospects and attempt to keep making hte playoffs for the next 5 years instead of winning a WS.
