Fitzgerald: Committee should pick Big Ten title matchup

08:17 AM ET 07.27 | Credit Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald for thinking outside the box. [Fitzgerald] would like to see the Big Ten use a selection committee to choose one of the participants for the league championship game. The Big Ten has only 10 of 12 teams eligible for its league championship game, and just four of those teams are in the Leaders Division. Ohio State and Penn State both are banned from postseason play -- and the Big Ten championship game -- because of NCAA sanctions. Fitzgerald, whose Wildcats play in the Legends Division, would like to see the Legends Division champ and another team, selected by a committee, meet Dec. 1 in Indianapolis. "At the end of the day, you see what happened last year in the Pac-12," Fitzgerald said.

Very interesting....shades of the NCAA FBS playoffs.
As I've heard some say, the conferences should pick the best two teams to play in the CCG, regardless of their standing, so that they have the best team available....

The man's got a point. Besides the ineligible teams issue, how many times have we seen the top three or four teams from a conference in the same division? Sirc SECw 2011, Big 12 South several times over the years, etc

I would think that if the FBS is going to a committee to pick the 4 best teams, then the conferences can do the same if they want...IMO

Can't see Wisconsin not being the Division Champ over Illinois, Indiana & Purdue. Fitzgerald does have a point though. Last year the SEC West had the 3 best teams in that Conference The year of Texas over Oklahoma over Texas Tech over Texas in the Big 12 South, the Big 12 North Champ,Missouri, had to go to overtime to beat Northwestern in their bowl game.
