Why Semin inked with Carolina

08:22 AM ET 07.27 | Until now, the Washington Capitals were all Alexander Semin knew in his NHL career. After signing a one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, Semin's agent made it clear that his leaving had nothing to do with not liking Washington. This was about hockey and the need to do more on the ice. "For Alex professionally he needed a fresh start," agent Mark Gandler said. ... With the Hurricanes, Semin will be paid even more money ($7 million) this season than he earned for any one year with the Caps. And he'll be asked to do as much under Kirk Muller as he did at times under Bruce Boudreau: killing penalties and more. "We all understand that every player has to deserve his ice time. But having said that, yes, they plan to use him in all situations," Gandler said.

Why he signed with CAR?
Because he had 2 offers on the table. Carolina for $7,000,000 and the local "bank" for $6,999,950 less.

"Why Semin inked with Carolina?" Because no one else wanted him!....If Carolina would've waited, they probably could have had him for less money. And the owners are crying that profit margins are shrinking....no freaking wonder when you sign a guy that broke 40 goal and 80 points plateau once in his career and you give him Crosby, Malkin type money!

That is a lot of money for a moody Russian. Carolina was smart in signing him for one year though. Longer than that and he probably would be in the KHL before his contract expired.

Carolina has a ton of cap space and are nicely adding pieces. Good signing imo. Could they have got him less, maybe, but it's not like they are against the cap so it doesn't really matter. 1 yr deal limits the risk. Play him with E Staal and he will put up 35+ goals.
