Browns getting more hands-on owner

10:06 AM ET 07.28 | Accurate or not, fan perception is that Browns owner Randy Lerner hasn't been as involved in running the organization as he should be. Lerner, for example, hasn't regularly attended NFL owners meetings, instead having President Mike Holmgren serve as the face of the franchise. James Haslam III, 57, who is known as "Jimmy," directs a hugely successful family business, and is from a family that is politically involved in the Republican party, charitably generous -- especially to its beloved University of Tennessee -- and are huge sports fans. If Haslam's management style extends to the football team, that might change. "He's focused," said Mike Edwards, president of the Knoxville, Tenn., Chamber of Commerce. For the moment, Haslam, described in a news story as "an executive with a piercing stare and stern demeanor," is focused on negotiating to buy controlling interest in the Browns. If successful, Edwards, who has known Haslam since they were Sigma Chi fraternity brothers at the University of Tennessee, predicted a more hands-on approach -- just as he runs the family business. "He has an 'A Team' throughout the organization," Edwards said. "He has the best of the best, but he doesn't turn it over to them. He is very engaged and very focused and goal-oriented and he drives himself hard. He's very competitive. He doesn't micro-manage them, but he certainly manages them."

Don't think I'd do that to the players that are sticking it out through this. Even as many people's expectations drop, there are a lot of players who said they're going to make the most of the situation and stay put.

But, I'll bet given the money he'll be investing, he'll quickly become a Browns fan; unless he likes to throw money away. Maybe he likes the Steelers organizational approach to running a team, which makes sense based on what the article says.

reports in cleveland is that keeping the team here is a must for this to happen. i also remember that there was some huge amout that had to be paid to the city if the team moves.

i dont know how much he damaged it here we were a very bad team when he arrived. i think we will know more after this year to see how all these picks from the last few years pan out. we are in the toughest division so its gonna take time to overtake the steelers ,ravens and even bengals (as long as they finally string 2 good seasons together.)

As bad as it looks, you gotta leave the current management in place, their have been too many hands in the project already, Holgrem needs at least another year, this is a very tough Division now with the emergence of The Bengels!

I believe "re-appearance" of the Bengals might be more accurate. Not convinced that they have truly emerged as contenders yet, but at least there is reason for hope in Cincy.

Agreed. Even Mangina got one more year to show if he had really destroyed the team completely, or if it was all the GM's fault. I don't think Holmgren has done too badly, but he was clearly hired to be the designated fall guy, and if ownership isn't happy with where the team is, he will get the axe first.
