Marlins '50/50' on trading Johnson

09:02 AM ET 07.29 | A Marlins official said there's a 50/50 chance the team will trade Josh Johnson before Tuesday's trade deadline. The Marlins want a lot, but they will carefully consider any offer. Texas, considered a likely suitor, reportedly has concerns about Johnson's health history and may be reluctant to deal top third base prospect Mike Olt. Impending free agents Carlos Lee and Carlos Zambrano are very much available in trades. The Marlins can't expect to get much for either - perhaps a mediocre prospect.

The media keeps calling it a fire sale, but it looks more like a pruning to me. Talented but under-performing and overpaid malcontent HanRam, plus a 36 year old middle reliever for a 22 year old starter and a prospect, a mid level free-agent-to-be pitcher and 30 year old 2nd baseman for a good 21 year old pitching prospect and 4 others. Evoldi (the 22 year old) goes into the rotation, and 5 prospects go into the minors. Plus they clear room at 2nd base for a younger and hopefully more talented player.
Josh Johnson is a dilemma. When he is healthy he is a #1 or #2 quality pitcher--but he is only healthy half the time. Trade him when he is healthy and his value is up, or keep him and gamble that health issues are in the past? I think the right answer is what the Marlins are saying--listen to offers, but only take an offer if it is really good.

The media is calling it a fire sale because of the Marlins long and rich history of.....fire sales. And all of em started just the way this one has.

How can the Marlins justify dismantling their team several months into the season with a new stadium?
