Cardinals, Jays to swap sluggers

By granting Scott Rolen his wish, the Cardinals may have found a way to fulfill one of their own. The Cardinals and the Blue Jays are close to finalizing a swap of third basemen that would bring Troy Glaus and his stout bat to St. Louis, while shipping the disenchanted Rolen north. Major-league sources confirmed the teams' negotiations Saturday, and multiple sources said the deal, hinging on physicals for both players, could be completed early this week.

We get the worst of this; but, it's not the worst trade rumor I've heard involving Rolen.

We get a steroid user who may not be able to perform without them. They get a guy who's bum shoulder has robbed him of power. We get a bad glove while Toronto gets a great glove. They'll need a great glove at third with Eckstein at short.

I am glad that Rolen is out. This team needs to be as positive as possible going into the season. If Glaus has a decent year of .275/20HR/95RBI it will be worth it. Even if Glaus misses these marks, not having Rolen's attitude in the clubhouse will help this team. I liked Rolen when we got him but his attitude over the past two years is hard to take. TLR may not be everyone's favorite manager but he is in charge and responsible for the team's performance, not making sure that an injured and slumping thirdbaseman is content.

It will be real interesting what Glaus does post-PED's.

January 13, 2008  11:59 AM ET

This is fine by me as long as Vernon Wells can come back from an off year blazing and Rios continues his climb towards greatness

Trading one cancer for a juicer. It's hard to tell who got the better deal, but the Cards are on the hook for only two more years, the Blue Jays for three, so I'd say the Cards got the better end of the deal. With Izturis replacing Eckstein, they have better field coverage at SS, and with Eckstein at SS, Toronto needs more field coverage at 3B. I'd say both teams should be happy.

I mean, what was the alternative? Another season of what had been going on in St. Louis?

Toronto will take Rolen! Glaus sucks... period.. i live near toronto, and glaus is a washed up piece of junk who sticks needles in his bum...

out with glaus
in with rolen

The numbers you want from Glaus aren't as good as Rolen's 2006 numbers. I know it's best to move Rolen; but, on the field we get the worst of this trade. Unfortunately, it is the best we're going to get in a Rolen trade.

Some time ago. a twit claiming he worked in the Card's front office announced on this site that, after the BoSox signed Lowell, they would trade him for Rolen, and it would happen around Christmas.

Not so much, I guess.

.275 from glaus? ha! hes a 240 hitter with no range no wheels and is just as injury prone as rolen... as a jays fan i love this deal.. stl lookin at what the other options were for rolen they did pretty good

January 13, 2008  07:01 PM ET

nobody respects Rolen's power, and he has one of the worst me first attitudes in baseball, good ridence

January 13, 2008  07:08 PM ET

The Cards should just rebuild. They have some good players but not much around them.

January 13, 2008  08:29 PM ET

I thought Rolen found heaven in St.Louis. He couldn't get along with Bowa in Philly, then he didn't like LaRussa in St.Louis, it won't be long before he's having it out with Gibbons in Toronto. Good luck with that Blue Jays.

January 13, 2008  10:46 PM ET

Rolen needs to leave StL. As a Cards fan, I'll take Glaus. Can we get the Jays to throw in a pitcher though? The Cards may be vying with the Marlins for worst-team status this year.

We are rebuilding. We're just trying to remain respectable while we do it. The problem is the farm system is toast. That was the price of the championship team. The only thing good in the FA market this year were outfielders and relief pitching - the only two things we don't need. The only thing that might save us is a better crop next year.

They have made rebuilding the farm system a top priority, but that will obviously take some time. I fear It's going to be a while before there's joy in Mudville. The business has changed. Rarely are the best players allowed to reach free agency. They are either traded, we have nothing to trade, or they are signed.

No we won't trade Pujols although I did ponder whether it might be the fastest way to reload the team.

January 14, 2008  02:58 AM ET

Maybe if you could put the two together you could have one average thirdbaseman. Like the saying goes for the both of them - "they are in the twilight of a mediocre career".

January 14, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Instead of talking about who won this deal, let's just agree everybody loses equally in a no-win situation. Yippee! From a Jays perspective, I was really uncomfortable with Glaus after the PED news broke. Conveniently he had surgery right afterwards and disappeared for the rest of the season, with neither he nor the team really commenting on the story. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm sure I'm not alone (JP does that to people). Anyways, I think it takes the pressure off and the distraction away from the team. As for Rolen's attitude, well, hopefully like Frank Thomas last year, he'll come in and settle just fine.

I am just trying to be realistic with my hopes for Glaus. Rolen's attitude is unbearable and I think that his shoulder is shot. I am not an orthopedic surgeon but his injured labrum does not allow him to catch up to an inside fastball up in the zone. Pitchers know this and that is why his average dropped from .296 in 2006 to .265 in 2007 and we won't even talk about his power. I think that if the Greatest Fans In Baseball give Glaus a chance we will be rewarded for our support. The pitching in the NL central is not top shelf so I think that Glaus may be more productive than most people think.

January 14, 2008  10:51 AM ET

My condolences to John Gibbons....I would suggest buying the extra-large bottle of Excedrin this year. And as far as the headline "a trade of sluggers".......anyone who has seen Rolen hit the last couple of years would not call him a "slugger". Glaus isn't going to help STL much, but at least we don't have to have the Rolen-LaRussa soap opera going on again.

You're right tigerpower. I just know we are worse off defensively and no better off offensively.

I'm sure Glaus will be given a chance by the fans. We all know the story.

I hope we don't give him the Encarnacion treatment. The man performed exactly as expected when he came here but was never liked at all.
