08:21 AM ET 07.31 | Mike Stoops is back. [Stoops] coordinated the Sooners' 2000 national championship defense and now is commissioned to do the same, starting with the 2012 season, which starts Friday when the Sooners report. OU fans clamored for his return. And Stoops was glad to be back. "I never felt that stable at Arizona," Stoops said. "I hung in there and fought the good fight. Even through our success, I never felt at ease." Stoops had his moments. The Wildcats were 8-5 in both 2008 and 2009, then got off to a 7-1 start and reached No. 13 in the AP poll. But 'Zona lost its final five games of that season, then five of its first six games of 2011, and Stoops was fired. ... "A hard eight years," Stoops said. "Really, really hard."

I agree to a point. At times we do not know the context of the questioning that these little snipets we read come from. Arizona is a no win situation, PERIOD! Hard to recruit and he did have some banner seasons for that program. In his defense, the money issue is set up by the world we live in, none of us would say no to 2 mil a year, but he did take a minimum salary to return and even was well under what Venables would have been paid if he had stayed and had no qualms about it. The guy wants to win, i like that fire!!!

Stoops was just not a head coach that could deal with the issues of being a head coach. Some guys are better assistants. Like Charley Weis, Joker Phillips, Derrick "Dunce" Dooley.

. "I never felt that stable at Arizona," Stoops said. "I hung in there and fought the good fight. Even through our success, I never felt at ease." Gee, that's too bad. I guess every other coach works from a chaise lounge and yours got lost. Bad coaching is always somebody else's fault. You should be on Oprah.

Yeah, welcome to the big table where you succeed or face the consequences and can't sponge off of brother.

Some are just not HC material.

I agree.....just in a SH-I_TT_Y mood this AM. 2 days back from from vacay and already need another. Just wish I got to complain about a $2 mill a year job for a change.

He's where he needs to be & not everyone is cut out to be the CEO. Hope he's happy @ Norman

I'm just here to see how this will be related in a bad way to Alabama, like the USC article was.

Rodriquez won't make it eight years. I give him three. That's what he had at Mich before they told him to leave.

Great point.

Second time around Stoops will be a much better head coach if he ever gets the chance again. Some guys have too much of a learning curve on their first head coaching position but again Stoops had 8years to learn.
