One Trojan willing to cede scholarship for Redd

08:24 AM ET 07.31 | Should it come to pass, USC's addition of Silas Redd threatens to push the program over its limit of scholarship players. One possible solution to the problem is asking a former walk-on now on scholarship to surrender said scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. I recently spoke to one of those candidates. ... The player said he would be "heartbroken" if it came to that because he had worked so hard to earn the scholarship. However, when the player initially received it, [Lane Kiffin] explained that it was a year-to-year deal and that the player might have to give it back if USC's roster limitations left no other recourse. Although losing his scholarship would be a source of frustration, the player said he would remain with the squad. "I love this team," he said.

Wow. A story of two kinds of loyalty. Lane Kiffin proves once again what kind of a pure slime ball he is.

Wow, this is Pulitzer-Prize worthy stuff here. Unnamed player who has work his arse off to get a scholly would be disappointed to give it up. Really??? Wow, great investigative journalism

Wait a minute! Wait just a cotton pick'en minute! Coach Saban is the only one allowed to do this according to the "insiders" on these boards. I am soooo confused now. Next someone will tell me that not every kid in Texas would die to go to UTx and that Mack Brown is not really the Pope in disguise.

I am sure the player not named did not want the troll of a coach to be able to pinpoint him out on the roster??? This is part of everything that is wrong with college football today! This kid works his tail off to earn a spot and gets what? NO KY!!!

Everyone knows Saban and Kiffin are the master roster managers. Nutt was in the group, but, ya know.

pachyderm, you beat me to it. Ref: comment #7. It's funny as hell that The SEC schools can get away with it, but other school can't!!!!

No worries for the player giving up his scholarship, the USC boosters will take care of his money issues.

CPO, yeah it doesn't seem right, but quite a few schools do it, especially the SEC schools.

No, it doesn't. It's shabby as h..l. But USC football is serious business and the walk-on is less good than Redd. Then again, it isn't like USC's the only one guilty of doing this kind of thing. I dislike Kiffin for what he did to TN - a lot - but other coaches do this, too.

All USC has to do is put the kid on financial aid through the financial aid office on campus. Or have his tuition bills waived as an exception, Or have the kid take out a Loan for the costs and have the loan paid off a few years from now by a booster. It's a simple solution and it happens at all schools when needed.

You would have to define "get away with it" for me. Every time there is even a hint that something like this is going to happen at Bama people are on it like flies on $****.
It sounds like Kiffen was up front with the kid as I imagine MOST coaches are when they recruit a kid that is borderline. I have to agree with the comment someone made about if this kid will stay and pay the tuition cost to stay at U$C. Although it is common knowledge that he will not have to pay for room and board since he will be given a house and car by Kiffen. :-)

It is wrong, but at least they knew in advance it could happen, unlike many SEC schools who will sit there and say that they will pick it up the next year as well, then turn around and ditch em with no notice because some high school kid shagged an assistant on a recruiting trip
