08:31 AM ET 07.31 | If there's an NHL version of "Moneyball," it may be happening in the Rockies, with Greg Sherman as its star. The Avs are seemingly destined again to have one of the league's 10 lowest payrolls. ... That's not a knock on Sherman and company, who have a handful of burgeoning young stars in Gabriel Landeskog, Semyon Varlamov, Matt Duchene, Erik Johnson and Ryan O'Reilly. But the money was definitely there to sign coveted free agents Zach Parise, Ryan Suter or Matt Carle -- and still available to make a trade for disgruntled Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan and take on his $5.1 million contract through 2014-15 -- but ownership has obviously chosen not to spend it.

See BBBJ's comment #3. Ask me how much sympathy I feel for teams who were given a superstar squad, didn't think long-term either performance-wise or revenue-wise, and now are struggling. For all I care, they turn into the next NY Islanders.

Great news, Avs fans. Your team will be mediocre for years only occasionally making the playoffs where they will lose in an early round. Wonder what their marketing slogan will be this year?
