Avs playing 2012-13 on the cheap

08:31 AM ET 07.31 | If there's an NHL version of "Moneyball," it may be happening in the Rockies, with Greg Sherman as its star. The Avs are seemingly destined again to have one of the league's 10 lowest payrolls. ... That's not a knock on Sherman and company, who have a handful of burgeoning young stars in Gabriel Landeskog, Semyon Varlamov, Matt Duchene, Erik Johnson and Ryan O'Reilly. But the money was definitely there to sign coveted free agents Zach Parise, Ryan Suter or Matt Carle -- and still available to make a trade for disgruntled Anaheim forward Bobby Ryan and take on his $5.1 million contract through 2014-15 -- but ownership has obviously chosen not to spend it.

"But the money was there....but ownership has obviously chosen not to spend it."
And these are usually the first guys to scream for revenue sharing...and how they can't compete with the big market teams...feh!

the late 90's early 2000's Avs spending model is no longer a viable option...

Tough to be an Avs fan today versus when the team first moved to Colorado and you had three of the world's best players (Sakic, Forsberg, Roy) fall in your lap...

See BBBJ's comment #3. Ask me how much sympathy I feel for teams who were given a superstar squad, didn't think long-term either performance-wise or revenue-wise, and now are struggling. For all I care, they turn into the next NY Islanders.

preaching to the choir my friend, I agree as werll...although I think they stioll have a ways to fall to be The Islanders....

Great news, Avs fans. Your team will be mediocre for years only occasionally making the playoffs where they will lose in an early round. Wonder what their marketing slogan will be this year?

It's funny how the owners keep giving gifts to the NHLPA for the CBA negotiations.

The Isles fall only seems greater do to the fact that they won four cups in a row
