Player rep: NHL 'asking for huge concessions'

08:30 AM ET 07.31 | Penguins forward Craig Adams considers himself "an optimistic guy," and that optimism may be tested in the coming weeks and months. Adams acknowledged Monday that the NHL is "asking for huge concessions" in early talks about a new collective bargaining agreement, but he is far from buying into any hysteria that the 2012-13 season is in jeopardy. ... "I know there's a long way to go. Things are moving along slowly. We're still hopeful we can get something done." Adams, a team NHL Players' Association representative along with defenseman Brooks Orpik, is in New York. He sat in on what he described as in-house informational meetings Monday with the NHLPA and will also sit in Tuesday when the NHLPA and NHL hold the latest round of discussions.

really? owners are asking for concessions/ What next? Union will be asking for more stuff?
Imagine that! There's a word for that...it's NEGOTIATIONS!!!!!
Though after some of the contracts handed out, owners looking for givebacks is rather laughable

What would the owners of the Wild like?
You would hope to never hear a peep from them at the negotiations...

Its one thing to negotiate when the two sides aren't that far apart, but the starting point of the owners is a pretty big departure from the last CBA. By the way, has anyone heard with the NHLPA is asking for?

I read somewhere on TSN's site that they are giving the NHL their first proposal sometime this week.

Unfortunately the owners have to know that with the big contracts that they are trying to move away from, the NHL cant afford another lock out and still be able to recover fan base while catering to its sponsors demand for a gentler game.
I see it as the owners blinking before shooting themselves in the foot. Then again I thought Weber would have been a Flyer so if the players dont concede anything... well, click, bang, limp...

Unfortunately, it can and the owners and league know it. They only need 18,000-20,000 people to fill an arena, which in most markets won't be a problem. And, tv viewing is low enough as it is, it won't take long to recover it.
Every time a sports league gets close to a lock out or strike, there is always talk that the fans won't be back but it never happens. We just want to watch the game. Very few of us will hold a grudge over a work stoppage for long.

I have no sympathy for either side. The owners asking for concessions while offering mega million dollar contracts for 14 years is rather funny when you think about it. Now, if they got a bit smarter and tried actually run the franchises in a fiscally responsible manner, it would be about 12 nano-seconds before the NHLPA sued them for "collusion". Does anybody here think Bettman does a great job? Trying to grow the league (profitably, not via expansion) and getting new sources of revenue (TV money which actually grows every year)? No? I don't either. What about Fehr? Trying to make sure players are treated fairly (whatever that means)? Think he wants to avoid a work stoppage so that his members get paid those mega-bucks? He does a great job. Remember baseball and the Expos? Remember that season ('94) where there was no World Series. But he avoided poverty for the players and got baseball out of Montreal.
I think Fehr is as despicable as Bettman......not the players..........Fehr. I hope things get settled but I don't have a lot of hope.

Is the entire NHLPA made up entirely of Penguins? And people say we're goofy for saying everything favors the Penguins.
