Young, Thigpen both struggling in Buffalo

08:04 AM ET 08.01 | The battle for the Bills' No. 2 quarterback job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick has jumped off to a rocky start. Vince Young, the favorite to be the top backup to [Fitzpatrick], needs time to get comfortable in a new offense. Tyler Thigpen, Fitzpatrick's No. 2 last season, is fighting to demonstrate more accuracy in coach Chan Gailey's rhythm-passing attack. Neither Young or Thigpen has looked anywhere close to being as good as Fitzpatrick in running the offense through just five practices. It's likely to be late in preseason before fans have a better sense of how much security the Bills have behind their starting quarterback. "They both have not done anything to distance themselves from the other," Gailey said after Tuesday's training camp practice.

With those two options, there won't be any security in a #2 passer until they pick up someone else.

I don't get a sense that Bills fans have much faith in the starting quarterback.

He's the first ray of real hope in Buffalo since Jim Kelly.

Yeah, I agree, DD, but he's always seemed like a great back-up rather than a solid starter. But I'm sure they'd rather have him starting than their other options as well as other options within the division with the exception of one team.

Great news to hear if I am a Bills fan. There is probably no way that Fitzpatrick can play every game this year, so the fans can look forward to another losing season.

Why not? He started every game last year, and I think he only missed one start in 2010 after being named the starter in week 3.

lol--makes you wonder about the coach/GM ability to judge QB talent. But still, after 5 practices they ought to be struggling, unless the offense is really simple...

Actually, the majority of Bills fans love Fitzpatrick and believe in him very much. Stevie Johnson is the only Bill ever to have back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. Fitz was at the helm for both years. Last year, Fitz had nearly 4,000 yards passing with 23 TDs ... not too shabby on a team with the worst defense in the league - and playing the last half of the season with broken ribs. He's the real deal and his is not the reason the Bills have stunk since he's been there. That was the defense ... and to say that's been addressed would be the understatement of the year. GO BILLS!
