08:16 AM ET 08.01 | How close was Josh Beckett to returning to his home state? According to multiple major league sources, one potential deal discussed by the Red Sox and Rangers prior to the non-waiver trade deadline included a package that would have sent [Beckett], Jacoby Ellsbury and Kelly Shoppach to the Rangers. It is unclear what player compensation the two teams discussed going from Texas to the Red Sox in such a deal. The proposal was described by one source as nothing more than a theoretical back and forth of ideas that never progressed to the point where the Red Sox approached Beckett to discuss his '10-5 rights.' ... Another source classified the talks as having reached a more advanced stage before hitting a wall.

As a Yankee fan I will not take a cheapshot at the Sox...............I can only say that with the talent they have you really have to scratch your head at their record and the way they are playing........
Could Valentine have disrupted this team that much ????
Wow................I am really proud of how much I have matured in my homerism....

If the Sox were trying to get top level minor league talent in that deal that's why it died.

Ellsbury, when healthy, is an absolute beast. Last year, he was certainly an MVP candidate. And Beckett needs a reboot of some sort.
It would be interesting to know who the Sox would have gotten back in this deal.

You can't blame Valentine for this, it's the same team that didn't make the playoffs the last two years under Francona. Personally the media should have the ASPCA called on them because they've beaten a dead horse with this whole Beckett thing. From all appearances all the trade rumors are nothing more than that since they never went to Beckett as he would have to approve any trade. The media has been trying it's hardest to get Beckett shipped out because he's not a guy that's media friendly, plus his teammates like him and that bugs the hell out of the media since they portray him as a cancer in the club house.

I say that because almost the first thing out of his mouth was to throw Youk under the bus.........That did'nt set well with Pedroia and the others.......They may have decided right there to just tune Valentine out............

I think a lot of that was all taken out of context and in the end Youklis didn't play as well as everyone wanted. Like I've said before, only the players are to blame here because if they played better last September they would still have Francona as manager. Somewhere along the players have to be responsable.

I agree.
However, Valentine is a terrible fit and I have said so since day 1.

The ownership wanted someone who was totally different from Francona, who when he replaced Grady Little was thought to be a bad fit as well being he had such a bad time with the Phillies.

And Beckett left the game last night early with a back strain. The over/under on missed starts is 4.

I was looking at that this morning 13 - 3 with a ERA in the low 3's. Some guys just can't handle New York but unfortunately there is no way of knowing that without giving it a try.
