Biggest deadline impact deal

08:16 AM ET 08.01 | Of all the names in new places, Zack Greinke in Los Angles holds as perhaps the most significant. Starting pitching is the name of the game when it comes to postseason play and the Halos went out and got the best starting pitcher on the market. It took a pretty penny to pry Greinke from the Brewers -- top prospect and shortstop Jean Segura plus two other top 20 prospects were sent to Wisconsin -- but it gives the Angels the best rotation of any American League contender. In addition to buying some insurance for the underwhelming performances of Dan Haren and Ervin Santana, it also strengthens Los Angeles in an area where the rival Texas Rangers are struggling.

I think the Giants getting Pence could be huge. Brings a good bat to a now decent lineup.
Victorino could help the Dodgers a lot, and they also got HanRam.
How about the Phillies? Both OFs gone. And Pence is a good ballplayer who is not a free agent.

My vote for the biggest impact deal at the deadline is the other LA team. They already have the pitching and by adding a center fielder and bullpen help it should help the Dodgers win the West.

How big an I'm impact the Greinke deal will depend largely on how well Dempster does for Dallas. If Dempster pitches well, Greinke and Dempster will be a wash.

yep--and as TheBus36 pointed out, Greinke/Dempster is likely a wash.

Agreed......and it was a smart move by the Rangers to bring in Dempster's catcher, Geovani Soto, to handle him. Don't have to go thru the pitcher/catcher learning curve.

Well Mumbles and the front office been telling them for weeks to get it together or changes are coming. Pence had some good plays as did Shane, but you couldn't depend on them. Look at Clif Lee 1 6 or something then look at his stats. It really is tough to win a game when no one on your offence gets a hit.

I doubt Dempster pitches as well as Greinke

Look at Lee's batting average against, it's not terrible around .265, but it's about 40 points higher than it last season that hurts.

Why is it that when the Yankees go out and sign the big guys (like the Angels did with Pujols & Wilson) and / or get the biggest guy on the market - folks say they are Buying a Championship.
Not hearing too much of that about the Halo's...
And they have done a good job putting this roster together...

He has so far this year in the same division and Greinke got to face the Cubs instead of the Brewers.

I think there is still about a $40 to $50 million total salary differential between the Spankees and the Angels. You could buy almost all of the Padres for that amount of money!

That's possible, but Greinke seems a better pitcher overall. As important as it is to catch the Rangers, its almost more important to make sure the Angels stay ahead of the surging Oakland A's and don't lose out on the wild card.
