Why the Dodgers didn't get Dempster

08:17 AM ET 08.02 | Wondering why Ryan Dempster isn't in Los Angeles? [The] Dodgers never budged. They had four young pitchers whom they refused to trade for a potential free agent such as [Dempster]. And they ultimately lost Dempster to the Texas Rangers when none of their other offers satisfied the Chicago Cubs. The four untouchables in the Dempster talks, according to major-league sources, were right-handers Zach Lee, Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa, and left-hander Chris Reed. The Dodgers kept all of them -- and most of their other better prospects -- while acquiring infielder Hanley Ramirez, center fielder Shane Victorino and relievers Brandon League and Randy Choate in three different trades.

Hats off to the Dodgers for not trading away their future for a rental player like so many other teams do to win now and most don't and weaken their farm system.

I think their farm system is depleted--after their top 4, the rest might have been a big fall off. The Cubs took a chance that Dempster wouldn't continue blocking trades, but it paid off for them.

The Dodgers did a Good Job, they would probably give up a prospect or 2 for a guy like Cliff Lee and pick up his salary, Dempster was and is a rent a Pitcher!

Agreed. I think back to the Red Sox years ago trading a young hitting prospect to the Astros for bullpen help in the form of Lary Anderson.
Jeff Bagwell probably would have looked good in a Sox uni.

Turns out, he was traded for a couple of low-level Ranger prospects ... neither of which figured in the club's long-term plans.

Agreed. It makes no sense to ship top prospects out for a 2 month rental.

Dempster punked the Cubs when he refused to go to the Braves. Randall Delgado would have been a great pick up for Chicago.

Yep. But the Cubs did get Vizcaino for Maholm. Could be a steal.

This was the first year the Dodgers had money to spend since McCourt had the team, they did well before the deadline and this off season will be even better.....IMO

FYI it is about winning NOW not years from now. The thing with Dempster is you know what you are getting. Unless someone was going to pay him CC or Hamels type money, I'believe he would had stayed at least another year. If the prospect were worth keeping they would be already in the majors instead of Fife.
