09:15 AM ET 08.03 | High on Jacque Vaughn's to-do list was to speak with all the players on the Orlando roster, preferably face-to-face. He has met already with Glen Davis, the team's projected starter at power forward. What was Vaughn's message to Davis? "Just be ready," Davis recalled Thursday. "Just making sure that you're ready. You're going to have the opportunity to be a contributor here. You're going to have the opportunity to do big things, and you just be ready, making sure that you come in [to training camp Oct. 1] the right way, in the right shape, and just holding me accountable." ... Davis entered last season's training camp, his first with the Magic, a bit out of shape after the five-month NBA lockout.

Finally... a non-DH Magic thread.

The Magic might be on to something in Vaughn....Monty Williams, Rick Carlisle, Scott Brooks, Pat Rilione (he, however did do very well at UK) were all very marginal NBA players, but are above average to excellent coaches.

QUOTE(#4):

Good start for Jacque. Already getting the attention of his players and sending a message.I'm curious what kind of on court personality Jacque will have. I tend to think that former players can go one of two ways. Either be annoying or else know how to motivate his guys. Doc Rivers seems to have mastered both. The jury is out on Jacque right now.

Morning MMA! What do you think about JV as the coach??

QUOTE(#11):

I'm happy with it. I wanted us to get another former player type coach. Somebody that could reach the players from a player perspective.Jacque is young with no HC experience but so was Doc Rivers when the Magic hired him. Doc went on to win Coach of the Year and eventually an NBA championship as a coach. You really can't judge until you give these guys a couple of years. The fact that Big Baby is impressed is a good thing since he played for Doc Rivers and then Stan Van Gundy.

Pretty good analysis, well thought out as usual from you. He was a very steady hand as a player and seems to have this same demeanor as asst coach. Studying under Pop also says a lot about where his bball IQ should be. A bit surprised they didnt go for a named HC but I'm one of those who believe that retreads are NOT the way to go when you want to hit the restart button on a franchise. Speaking as a neutral observer, I like the hire.

I like the hire also. Orlando under Hennigan seems to be taking a different approach now. I'll have to wait to see how it works out but I think they are going to go for youth and build them from there.

Then why the heck they didn't take HOU's offer for so many young prospects and draft picks for DH and end this freaking drama?

I know that's off-topic, but while I like JV hiring, Orlando's handling of everything else deserve a grade F.

QUOTE(#17):

I dunno. I don't think the Houston deal was real at that point because they didn't know what their cap space was yet. Don't forget they had tendered offers to Lin and Asik and wouldn't know if they accepted or not for a few days. Then after both of them accepted and ate away at Houston's cap space the deal grew real quiet.I'll grade Orlando after all is said and done. Hard to give them a grade until then.

Think Ewing will ever get a shot, or has he just been built up by the media?

I think he may eventually get a shot. I'm not sure why he hasn't so far unless he doesn't do that well as an assistant. Maybe he doesn't present himself well enough in front of cameras either. He doesn't seem super polished and nowadays coaches need to be media saavy also.

Did Stan VG ever give and glowing reviews to the press about him?
