Red Sox contingent pushing for Ellsbury's exit

09:33 AM ET 08.05 | There is a mounting chorus around town insisting the best course of action for the Red Sox is to trade Jacoby Ellsbury, their fragile but often fabulous center fielder, in the coming offseason to avoid losing him following next season to free agency. Because Ellsbury comes armed with the Agent Orange of baseball negotiators, Scott Boras, and because the Sox come saddled with Carl Crawford's increasingly obscene contract, it is logical to assume Ellsbury's price in 2014 will be unfathomable and unmatchable. His critics question his toughness, but the fact is for Ellsbury to cash in he needs to put up big numbers in 2013 and he knows it.

Agree wholeheartedly. He is pretty much the only guy worth anything on our worthless team.

I like the line about needing to put up big numbers in 2013 "and he knows it," implying that he has chosen to be injured and can just choose to not be injured next year. They used to call that "yellow dog journalism," but I think we just call it "Boston Herald journalism" these days. Means the same thing.

Won't get much for him....as everyone is saying he's always hurt....and who's to say he wants a long term deal...if he's smart he should be looking for a nice 2 year deal with an option ..stay healthy put up numbers then go for the long term big money deal......Sox IMO are better off holding on to him for another year or two....

I think Ellsbury has been unfairly tagged with the "always hurt" label. He's had two major periods missed due to injuries; in one he was crashed into by Adrian Beltre which is about as close to getting blindsided by an NFL strong safety as you can get. In the other he had a 190-lb shortstop come down on his shoulder while his arm was extended. Both situations could rightly be classified much more as "unfortunate" "unlucky" than "oft-injured" or worse, "brittle." I'd be more leery of the guy who spends 2 to 3 trips on the 15-day DL on an annual basis than Jacoby Ellsbury. I don't doubt that many GM's out there see it the same way I do.

The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are largely to blame for the majority of long term, overpriced contracts.

the problem is, Boras will not let Ellsbury sign a contract, either renew or an extension with a new team, until he is a free agent, as thats his shtick with all past soon-to-be-free agents to get top dollar.
So any team looking to obtain him is looking at a one year rental, the pleasure of dealing with Boras if they want to extend him, and about 50-80 million dollars more than whats 'reasonable'. You can also see Boras' spin already: 'best OF since griffey, more power than god, blah blah blah....starting price is 23 million per year. Yankees/Mets your on the clock....

Interesting, I didn't realize his injuries were the result of collisions.
