Mickelson jabs at Rees Jones, Bethpage Black changes

10:12 AM ET 08.05 | The Tour is inching toward this fall's playoffs, which means it must be time to take some shots at oft-criticized architect Rees Jones. With the BMW Championship moving to Crooked Stick from Cog Hill though, it doesn't seem worth the effort. In fact, only East Lake, which Jones restored in 1994, is on the Tour dance card this fall. That didn't stop Phil Mickelson from taking a jab seemingly in Jones' direction this week when Lefty was asked about some of the changes officials have planned for Bethpage's Black Course that will host the first playoff event, The Barclays. "I've always been a fan of the original designer's interests in how a golf hole is designed to play from its inception," Mickelson smiled, "as opposed to somebody else who comes in and tries to alter it for their own benefit or ego."

While I don't consider myself a fan of Phil, I agree with him here. Rees Jones follows the ignominious footsteps of his father who made a name for himself doing hack jobs for the USGA.

Bethpage, Home of DaGweeed, Phil has a point and this is a public Course which Farther Time and The Weatherman really beat up, We also have courses that are Named Red,Blue,Yellow and Green to go along with our Monster Black. If you live on Long Island and don't belong to a Golf Club this is the place live, Know a few of the starters helps!!!

The way Phil has been playing lately he needn't worry about a course designer, or re-designer. Unless of course they've re-designed the rough and the traps. Lots of good players at the Firestone appeared worn out and mailed it in on Saturday and Sunday. Not a criticism, just an observation.

I've been pulling for Rory since he won the Masters last year. He showed signs of life again last week.

I'm guessing you meant the US Open?

Not crazy about the re-designs either Phil, but I liked you a lot more when you just played golf...

LOL. I never let facts stand in the way! Thanks for the correction and yes, that's what I meant. I'm still hoping the kid gets his mojo back. And he did show a bit more last week

Phil, you made $47 million last year. Why not design and build your own golf course and host a PGA tournament so you can show the "hacks" how it's done.
