Chipper won't reconsider career move

Bye, Chipper. Hall of Fame? Yes. Playing next season? No.

Jones is doing what a lot of other older players should have done is retire on top not trying to hold on and embarrass them self by keeping on playing.

Smart man. Leave on your own terms. I always think of Willie Mays as the poster boy for greats who stayed too long. Who wants to be remembred for an embarassing final season?

Nothing wrong with a guy leaving the game while still having some skills. He's been great to watch. Time to get on with life.

His body has held up pretty well so far this year, but he is 40, the wear and tear just keeps adding up, and the chances of getting in another un-injured season are pretty small now. Good time to hang it up.

Very true--I remembering watching Carlton get shelled with the Twins. I don't think it diminished his amazing career, but it was sad seeing an all-time great pitching so poorly while seemingly unable or unwilling to admit that it was time to move on.

Yup--Jones has had his share of physical ailments in recent years and it's only a matter of time before either a major injury ends forces him into retirement or his skills begin to seriously deteriorate. He's had a great run and a HOF career; as you stated, it's a good time for him to hang them up.

100% agree. Ted Williams was the best example. Great career, leave on top, memories of past, current and future fans are of the great career you had...........not the sadness of watching someone unable to play even in a mediocre fashion, much less up to his own standards. Great career Chipper, great season this year too. Congrats and see you at your induction to the Hall.

Thanks for memories Chipper. Great to see him playing at a very high level in his final season. I would love to see the Braves make one more playoff run to send Chipper out in style.

Next stop: Cooperstown.

I'm a Mets fan and I respect Chipper Jones and Bobby Cox more than most baseball players in history. Pure class. Chipper has always played the game the way it was meant to be played. I won't miss him, as he is a Met killer. But baseball is losing one of its all-time greats after this season. I hope he stays true to his word and goes out gracefully.

I am a Braves Homer, but I could not have said it better.

Braves are going to miss they're best hitter next season.

It's funny if he'd have hung em up after last year you'd have said he stayed too long. Now he's having a nice year and it's "lets give it another try". I agree better to go out on a high note, this should be his finale. I think he's HOF too since he hasn't been tainted. Few power hitters haven't really, Big Hurt, Thome, and Chipper come to mind.

Maybe if he were in the AL he could catch on as a DH, but you have to respect him leaving on his own terms and possibly at a high point of his game ; ie Mike Mussina. Many will be sad to see him leave but hats off and we look forward to seeing you make the headlines again in five years; HOF.
