Cards concerned about starting shortstop

08:12 AM ET 08.06 | St. Louis' starting shortstop Rafael Furcal sure could use the rest. [Furcal] did not start Sunday night in the Cardinals' 3-0 victory over Milwaukee and Matheny conceded that the switch-hitting veteran might need a reduced workload. ... Only left fielder Matt Holliday has started more at his position than Furcal, 101 games to 94, but Furcal has played through the back spasms and increased soreness in his shins for several months. He came in as a pinch-hitter Sunday and grounded out in the seventh, then stayed in the game at shortstop as Descalso moved to second base. Furcal's batting average has plummeted to .266 as he's hit .203 in the past 29 games. ... [Said Matheny:] "We'll have to be careful with him or we're going to lose him."

Dude is just hard to rely on.

The Cards knew this when they sign him for two more years. With no help in Memphis that leaves one option, waiver wire for help.

Not sure why they do not try and use Schumaker at Short?

He must be terrible defensively if that is the case?

Schu is a much better bat in the line up as well.

Ronny Cedeno da Mets!!!

They could probably get Brendan Ryan back from the Mariners--he can't hit a lick, but he is a gold glove type fielder. Or they could take a flyer on Kawasaki; this is his first season in the US, hasn't hit much in extremely limited playing time, looks like a pretty good fielder.

Not too much of an issue given Descalso's current form.

Agreed. Descalso doesn't kill them at short defensively at all.

Schumaker is one of the worst defensive second basemen in the league. That's why the Cardinals are still looking for a permanent second baseman. Anything would be better at short than Schumaker.
