Salvation may come Tuesday for Rays

08:13 AM ET 08.06 | Consider it now possible that Evan Longoria will return to MLB action Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Rays manager Joe Maddon termed it a "50-50" proposition, but was encouraged that Longoria felt good enough to play Sunday for Triple-A Durham, when an off day was expected. Longoria went 2-for-3 with a pair of line-drive singles in Durham's 6-4 loss against Gwinnett. Overall, Longoria has batted .200 (5-for-25, all as the designated hitter) in his eight-game rehabilitation assignment. Given the Rays' recent lack of offense, only four runs in their past five home games, including Sunday's 1-0, 10-inning defeat against the Baltimore Orioles, Longoria's return might be viewed as potential salvation.

Could be a nice post-trade deadline acquisition for the Rays.

I wonder if he will return as the DH for a while. If he isn't playing in the field on his re-hab, then it sounds like he still isn't fully healed.

Batting 5-25 at AAA level? I wouldn't say he's ready to come back to the Big Show yet.

Was about to say how not even Longoria can save the Rays season - but they are actually holding up very well...
Now if only Upton could figure out a way to not whiff a couple times a game, they might have hope :-)
