Owner tells Riley how it is

Nice trial balloon by Pat Riley last week, telling the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he might step down as head coach after this season to concentrate on his duties as team president. (Riley, of course, denied he said it to the other papers in town.) Only problem: We hear Micky Arison, the Heat's owner, has told Riles there's no way he is going to allow him to skip out on the team to go back upstairs, as he has already done once. Riley is apparently free to resign both of his jobs or keep them both, but Arison wants Riley to clean up the mess that Miami has become on the court.

Love it. Way to step it up Micky and make Riley take ownership of this mess and not take the easy road of quitting whenever he deems the season unsuccessful.

Ecellent! Ilike the Heat better already

January 13, 2008  11:23 AM ET

Way to go Micky! Riley can't just ditch his team as coach and make it someone else's problem! Sounds like Riley has to tough it out and make it better like every other coach who gets hired.

January 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

That was a stand-up move. Riley stole the championship from Stan, signed dinosaurs and wishes to run away. Look Pat, you're not gonna reach Lenny Wilkens' record so fall back, period. When I watch the Heat, they look like a team that isn't coached at all. Just running up and down the court. Wade has more pull with these guys. I can only assume Riley's been tuned out since last season. Just resign, man. Your time is done.

K Mickey good job of lettin him know who's boss. Now 4 the main concern our heaters are 8-28 that needs 2 change now because we are the worst rebounding team & free thro % team.
Now rumours last season were that we would get Iverson we never got him and instead we kept Posey who now is having a great season with Boston & Iverson who wanted 2 play 4 us is in Denver now and still not happy cause he knows Denver isnt going n e where in the playoffs.
Bibby is another player surrounded by trade talk for us 2 aquire but lets not 4get the Cavs want him also & Dooling is another 1 on the list that might be traded.
The solution is simple: trade Smush for Dooling, trade J Will if needed & buy out Iverson's contract or trade J Will & Luke Jackson for Bibby or , release Joel Anthony , a rookie who has done nothing and return Marcus Slaughter & Brian Chase 2 the mix & were back 2 championship contention.

Starting Heat 5: Iverson or Bibby, Wade, Davis, Haslem & Shaq

Bench: Quinn, Cook, Dorrell, Dooling, Slaughter, Blount, Barron, A Johnson, Chase.

All of a sudden Pat Riley looks like the Isiah of the south.

January 13, 2008  11:55 AM ET

That can be viewed 2 ways. Riley is the reason the team is in this position. It could prove to be counter-productive to give him this option. Riley should be fired. PERIOD.

January 13, 2008  12:19 PM ET

Arison should have known this was going to happen. He mortgaged his future when he traded for Shaq, who was getting fat and out of shape even then. He did it to win a championship, which he did, so what's the beef now, Mickey? You saw Riley do the "I'm burned out" act once before, then push Van Gundy out when things started to look up. History runs in cycles, and the Heat epitomize that.

January 13, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Wow! Someone doing the right thing? I'm impressed with Arison's stand. Now, pupe or get off the pot Riles!

January 13, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Damn! No more hip surgeries!

January 13, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Why should he be president to hes a idiot. He thought smush parker was going to save the heat ge FIRED from both jobs and get out of the orginiztion. Ols Hag.

January 13, 2008  03:06 PM ET

This is what Dolan should have done months ago with a mandate to win... but the big diff is that Riley really can coach (note those rings)... and Thomas can't and never could.
Also Arison has stones and Dolan has... well.. you tell me... the Knicks season was over before it started and Dolan has done nothing.
i guess he needs Tampax.

January 13, 2008  05:24 PM ET

I am glad an owner is finally holding a GM to the fire..

January 13, 2008  09:08 PM ET

Party Pimp you are right...I am go out to the store and buy Dolan some cheap Tampax right now

January 13, 2008  10:38 PM ET

What are the chaces Heat trade Wade to Chicago for a bunch of players (same names mentioned in the Kobe deal), Shaq's as good as gone - 1 year max after this one, Heat would want to rebuild and I don't know if Wade would want to stick around, so Heat should get value for him now! I'd be happy to see Heinrik and Gordon go plus a draft pick

January 14, 2008  02:36 AM ET

Good move on Mickey's part but too late. Will all that money he is also to blame for the way this team is. Gave Riley too much power. I should point out that I am a Laker fan and now I feel sorry for the Heat. The way this is looking is that Wade will probably will opt out and not resign with the team. No players to play with. Common where is the common sence in signing Smush Parker WHY! Didn't Riles see what Smush did with the Laker. At lease Lakers did not tune out Jackson. Same thing when Riles was with Lakers. Lakers just subbotaged against him. He is nice guy descent coach but his style of coaching went out in the 1990's. He is bullish in practice and moder day players just do not respond to that. I wonder what Shaq will say about this? Bottom line Arison gave order to Riles to win a championship that is why they got Shaq. Now all of this backfired in their faces. Should have kept Kapono and Posey and paid the luxury tax. Well at least they will get a good draft pick, but I do not know if Wade will wait for the team to turn around. Good Luck Heat!

January 14, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Now, Riley, you can put your tail between your legs and go back to the bench.
Thanks!

This is a good move by the owner. Why should he be able to bail and let someone else clean up his mess. He bailed before when the team was struggling, then jumped back in when they were good so he could win another championship. People get on Phil Jackson saying he has never won a championship without the best players . . . . .what has Riley done without the best players? He may have made a team better, but he has never one a championship without arguably the best/or some of the best players in the league. His skills are overrated in my opinion.
