Padres' new owners already on notice

08:10 AM ET 08.07 | If the new ownership group, including the O'Malleys and Seidlers, thought purchasing the Padres was difficult, they may not have seen anything yet. [San Diego has] waited long enough for the Padres to not be horrible. If the Chargers had been able to satiate us with a championship, maybe we'd be a little more mellow. But, alas, we just don't have a lot of patience. I'm not saying you need to win a World Series next year. But you need to contend. We should know even before next season starts whether you justify our optimism. ... Tell us and show us you have the ways and means and desire. Before clamming up, Peter Seidler did say this to our Bill Center: "Assuming we receive approval, there will be a prompt, efficient and smooth transition."

I don't have a lot of confidence that San Diego is going to catch up to the likes of the Dodgers and Giants. I cannot see them getting there let alone sustaining things on that level.

Can you see the Padres going after Greinke? Zach may not like the bright lights of LA, and he'd be more at home in laid-back San Diego.

Being a pitchers friendly ball park it will be hard for them to bring in big name hitters there because the ball doesn't travel very well there.

Detroit did a fine job of that. It may be a little more difficult, but it's hardly impossible.
Also, they could always bring in the fences a little.

I wonder if the reporter for the Union-Tribune really represents what San Diego fans think, or if this is his way of telling fans what they ought to think.

New, aggressive ownership would help. Updates to the stadium wouldn't hurt. Better choices by the baseball braintrust would be nice. The Padres have been mediocre for a long time, with only occasional bursts of brilliance. No, I'd say the "Union-Tribune" reporter got it right. Eventually, no one will show up if something doesn't change. Too many things to do in and around San Diego to go see bad product in a cavernous ballpark.

This team has a lot of young talent. They could be a force in coming years if they find someone good to run the team.
