Helton better off retiring?

08:11 AM ET 08.07 | In sports, where there are few walk-off careers, players are more likely not to go out in style. Which brings us to Todd Helton [who on Friday will undergo surgery on the labrum in his right hip]. He's the greatest Rockies player ever, and given his longevity, rolled-up-sleeves leadership and breathtaking statistics, there's no close second. ... For Helton to return, he would have to agree to a different role. He wouldn't be Jason Giambi, but it would be close. Helton would likely start a few days a week, pinch hit and be a defensive replacement. ... If Helton wants to get back into the batter's box. That's his prerogative. I would love to see it. But he doesn't owe us that.

I'd take Larry Walker over Todd Helton as all time best Rockies player.

Well ... Walker played for other teams. Helton's been the Rocks his whole career.

The Rockies are in a bad spot because it looks like there all time best player is not going to retire on his own. He is hitting .237, bat speed is slower, and it is the same old story these guys think they still can but father time has call to let them know it is time to quit.

Good point. Guess I forgot to consider that. Either way, I mean Helton has had a great career too.

Helton probably has the better numbers but a bit of a stretch to say there is no close second. Walker about 10 great years for Colo.

Larry Walker probably ranks slightly ahead of Helton. Now for a VERY short list: Greatest All-Time Rockies Pitchers...

Walker's hey day came before they installed the humidor in Coors. Most of Helton's career has taken place post humidor.
Playing in Coors pre humidor was a bigger performance enhancer than any PED.

I love this discussion, Helton v Walker.
Look at the Walker's ten years with the club, put them up against Helton's best ten-year-stretch (Cherry picking?... So?) . it's great how close they actually are. Still Helton wins it I think. Add the "career-with-one-team" aspect and it is obvious which Rockies player is the greatest.
Btw: Check out Helton's 2000 season - he was FIFTH in MVP voting!
(Gotta say, Helton's beard always irritated me, buut that's just me...)
