08:03 AM ET 08.08 | Earlier this week, Chris Cooley said he'd play some fullback in Washington's preseason opener on Thursday in Buffalo. First-stringer Darrel Young has been sidelined by a strained left hamstring, giving Cooley, the franchise's all-time leading receiver among tight ends, the opportunity to showcase his versatility in his attempt to make the roster. "As far as getting the blocks done, I've never had a problem getting the blocks done out of the backfield," Cooley said after Monday's walkthrough. ... Cooley's experience playing fullback gives him a bit of an advantage in the competition for tight end roster spots. Niles Paul is physically capable of playing fullback, coach Mike Shanahan has said, but he is unfamiliar with the position. The Washington Times

"In his attempt to make the roster."

Sounds about right.

HAIL!

BUT, he couldn't ever block as a TE, so we'll see how this one plays out.

'Skins star TE

More like "past star" and current fringe player...

Sounds like he doesn't agree with your assessment, but I'll believe you over him.

Nothing personal against Cooley. He was a decent player on some horrible teams, and cashed in. I can't knock the hustle. However sticking with fan favorites (as we did prior to Shanny) doesn't always equate to wins. Especially when the players have pretty much been on losing teams their entire careers. I applaud his efforts, but we're ready to win some games.

This really is all about max protection for the QB.

Just don't show us a picture of your playbook, please.

Is "trying his hand at fullback" another way of saying he showed up at camp packing an additional 20 or 30 pounds, and he's too lazy to work it off to get back into shape to be a tight end?

I was thinking the same thing. And, it may turn out to be a good investment.

Hail to the Redskins!

We know some owners stick with players just a little too long.

We'll have 3 starters missing from the O-Line, and a fullback in tomorrow night's pre-season opener. You're right.

I think Chris' days are numbered. He hasn't been able to stay healthy as a tight end, how is he going to make it as a fullback?

On to that broadcasting career, Chris.

It's a way of making the roster because he isn't cutting it as a TE anymore.

I hope it is local (DC) and not national in scope.

I have a feeling this dude would wear me out in a hurry.
