Bochy maps a new plan for closing games

08:15 AM ET 08.08 | Jeremy Affeldt had already gone on record four months ago to call closing-by-committee an exercise in futility. He's a believer now. Giants manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti assembled the relievers and delivered an impassioned speech, telling them that matchups would dictate who inherits the closer role on a given night -- and that this bullpen was talented and tough enough to adjust. "I think Boch and Rags both said it pretty good," Affeldt said. "They said, 'Look, this is what we have to do. We believe in you guys. We know what can happen in these situations, but we have a lot of faith that this bullpen can do it.' When you're addressed like that, you want to go out and back them up."
